Smile I want to buy a 1994 Jaguar XJ12

I am 18 years old and very hardworking. I have earned $30,000 and am obsessed with the classic Jags. I really like the XJ12 from 1994. I am able to buy one for $11,000 with 60,000 miles on it. The car is in excellent condition. Like perfect. It just seems a bit over priced to me. I know that I am young, but I am in a position where I can afford my dream car and don't know if I will be able to ever again in the future. Let me know if I should pursue at my age, thoughts on the model, and also how I should negotiate the price! Thank you so much if you have gotten this far! I would really appreciate the help.

Hi sundar1234,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! I share your excitement about classic Jaguars!

First of all, I commend you for being such a hard-working young person who has already earned and saved such a significant sum. You are off to a great start in life.

The 1994 XJ12 is a rare and special car, and sellers can ask any price they wish. However, like most luxury cars, Jaguars depreciate over time, and according to Kelley Blue Book, a 1994 XJ12 in Excellent condition (extremely rare in a 22-year-old car) has a private-party sale value of just $2,340. The trade-in value is $980-$1,772:

Buying any 22-year-old car is going to come with the requirement of of more upkeep and repairs than a newer car would require, and buying any car with a 12-cylinder engine is going to require more knowledge and expertise in order to maintain and service it. Even at just 60,000 miles, many components of this car will have deteriorated simply from age, such as the suspension bushings, electrical connectors, door lock actuators, fuel pumps, radiators, etc. There is always something to fix on an old Jag, so there is always something to spend money on.

If you could purchase this car at something close to the Kelley Blue Book value, and you are willing to learn how to service and maintain the car mostly yourself, and are willing to invest in the necessary tools and have the time and space, and can live if at times your only car will not run, then I would highly recommend that you buy this car. But at $11,000 or even $5,000, I would walk away. There are plenty of cars out there if you're patient. You may decide that for now it is prudent to buy a car that requires less attention and investment. Or you could buy one car that is less exotic but reliable, plus a Jaguar with potential that you can enjoy without having to depend on.

And with such a large sum saved, consider maxing out your annual IRA contribution so some of your savings can grow tax-deferred for the future day when you'll have all the time you want to enjoy and maintain your favorite Jaguar.

Cheers,

Don

An XJ12 from just about any year is a rare model. It also comes with exclusive parts, and while most body parts interchange between the XJ6,some trim pieces are XJ12 specific and are difficult to find.Mechanically, most are the same as an XJS under the hood but there may also be a few model specific parts. Maintenance costs can get quite expensive unless you know what your doing and willing to get your hands dirty. Don't forget that the 12 cylinder uses more parts, more injectors, plugs, wires, etc,so costs can add up for repairs. I'm assuming that the $11K price tag is from a dealer. It seems a bit high. While a regular 1994 XJ6 or Vanden Plas might sell for around $3-4K with that kind of mileage and in very good to excellent condition, then I would think an XJ12 would be up to $1K more in value considering the mileage and condition. Some car owners have no idea what the value of their car is worth, and some price it low and some unreasonable high, but it all depends on what a buyer is willing to spend that determines it's price. It's your money and decision but check it over wisely because most times there is no recourse to buying a new car. Look over every inch of the car if you decide to pursue it because certain areas of the car were notorious for rust, especially in and under the trunk lid and around the taillights(inside and out),the wheel arches, and around the front and back windows. Most things can be fixed but at a cost. Good luck with your decision.

Hi sundar1234,

Our fellow member WinstonWolf came across this Craigslist listing for what appears to be a very nice 1994 XJ12. The only challenge might be its location in rural northern Arkansas, south of Branson, Missouri. The car has been available for quite some time, so the asking price of $7,500 might be negotiable. I understand from WinstonWolf that fairly good service records are available dating back to 2007:

Here is one that you should be able to get a good deal on. They have had it for some time and have lowered the price twice. It looks like it is in good condition and pretty low mileage. Jaguar XJ12 Sedan 1994

Good find! Looks like a beauty all right, great price, I'd jump on it if I were in the market for a 12 (I'm not; 6 is good enough for me!)

I thought the title to this thread was " I want to buy a 1994 Jaguar XJ12". I was replying to that but maybe I got things confused.... I do that often. Sorry.

Hi dskul1,

Perhaps you were confused because Larry said he was not in the market for a 12, but it was the original poster (OP), sundar1234, who started this thread because he is interested in finding one. So your link to an XJ12 was appropriate and appreciated.

Cheers,

Don
