Default Power Steering Pump Leak - fix or replace?

Fellow Jag owners,

'93 XJ6

One last little project before she's a daily driver.

I have a pretty wicked power steering leak out of the pump (shaft, specifically).

I know I'm going to have to separate the pump from the collar deal covering the timing gear shaft. So 3 questions:

1. Does anyone have a step by step or tips for separating the pump from the collar? All Data has one, not the best.

2. Is the Jaguar tool necessary or can I make a generic puller work?

3. Repair kits are everywhere, but if it takes me 8 hours on a prayer that I did it right and fails, well... not sure I can afford to throw any more Jag parts...is it worth it to repair? $10 repair kit vs. $70 rebuilt pump (after core refund).

Any insight is much appreciated, my searches on this forum didn't reveal much!

I don't know about the independents, but I have had success rebuilding the pumps at the dealership. We, of course, had the tool to remove the drive cog from the shaft and therefore disassemble the pump. Sadly, i just threw away a rebuilt pump with the cog. The one leak was fixed but it kept leaking from the feed hose connection, hence why I had it as a spare. The tool looked like a steering wheels puller with two legs that fit exactly in the two rectangular slots in the cog. It pushed on the shaft and pulled on the cog. Installation used a threaded rod that went into the center of the shaft while a part of the tool pushed on the cog while a nut was threaded down onto the threaded rod. The pictures are of the tools from the SPX website. Thats about $375 worth of tools there. I hope this helps.

Sorry, forgot one more part of the tool, this piece holds everything still while turning the nut.

My steering pump was leaking and one of my chevy techs said it might just be an o-ring. He was somehow able to remove the old o-ring and replace it without having to remove the pump from the car.

This guy was a 20 year master GM tech and assured me most folks could not have pulled that off.

Anyway, it solved my leak and no rebuild necessary.

Good luck.

I know that BPI (Motorcars Ltd.) sells the Rebuilt pump with the adapter attached.
You pay a core charge and it is refunded when they get your old one back.
You don't have to disassemble the aluminum adapter, just the mount bolts on the engine.

Reuse the soft drive coupler.
