in any case, Jaguar called it "steering assist". (to assist you in turning the extra large pizza-sized steering wheel).

Used to have a mid 70's 'Vette with a small block 350 and no power steering.
Nightmare to park...

Default The real question really is?

Why would you not want the power steering?

you don't want power steering if you don't want your girlfriend, wife, or daughter to borrow the Jaguar.

Well, true there was life before power steering. OK in light cars. But, in the big ones, oh boy.

and, cars designed for no power steering used a greater mechanical advantage in the steering boxes. Read, lots of turns of a big wheel. Not o be described as quick steering.

So, steering boxes, whether rack and pinion or recirculating ball designed for power assist do not have the mechanical advantage. Quicker, but tough with the PS out!

Some years ago, my car lost PS for just a minute or two as I turned into my drive. A big heave on he wheel to complete the turn.

Not practical on these cars. Fix it or park it.
