I loved the idea of clening the brether screen. Do I have to use a new gasket or can I reuse the old one and do the job now??

PS. As soons as I read this thread I ran down to clean it and realized I don't have a new gasket.

In most cases the gasket is so old and brittle it can't be reused.....it falls apart on removal.

Two gaskets, actually. One on both sides of the screen

Default help still needed peoples

I have been able to finally see where the oil is coming from, but don't know what it is called, or why it is leaking. My guess is it needs a new gasket.

The oil is coming from around (top) of the block thing that the oil filter and pressure thingies are sprouting from. The leak is from between the block thing and the engine block. When I start the engine, oil wells up, then it drips down the side.

Is anyone able to name this, maybe pictures, and a part name or number for the gaskit?? I have tried Google, but it was not much help.

Cheers,
Richard.

Oil filter housing gasket.

The part number I have is EAC6336, but I reckon that has been superceded. Your Parts people will know the new numbers.

This diagram is S2, but the principle is the same, just the filter in a different place.

it is also called the "oil filter Head".

there is a paper gasket between the Head and the Block.

there are many types of these "Heads" so you need to drain the engine oil, remove the entire Head assembly and take it to a parts place where they can match the gasket to it.

take the opportunity to clean it well, it could be clogged.

How about the way it was done in the old days? Get some gasket material (paper), a little hammer, a pen and a piece of tubing with the end sharpended.

I'd suggest present day liquid gasket making goop. but, not enthusiastic. a call to their tech?

Carl,
I agree but it is such a pita to cut that particular gasket... if he can scrape the old one off and trace it on gasket paper, then add a bead of Hylomar on both sides...

Dont forget to replace that hose whilst its apart, AND that Jaguar specific O/ring where that same return pipe enters the sump.

Grant...
Are you referring to part 4 in the diagram you posted as the Jag specific 'O' ring? and is that the hose you are meaning, or is it parts 8 and 9 for the short oil return hose?? And, stupid question, but is that diagram upside down? I seem to have my oil filter sticking out sideways, not going upwards?

I had another look (hard looking through the inlet manifold and fuel injection piping) and I could be a little wrong. It may not be coming up through the oil filter block thinggy, but from the oil hose where it enters it at the top rear of the oil filter head assembly.

Me thinks its time to crank up the still again....feels like I need a few medicinal beverages again.

Thanks heaps.

Richard.

Any Kiwi's on here?? Where is the best place to get things like the 'O' rings and gaskets etc. The new parts? I know where to get good used stuff, but the little things that need to be new? Repco? Super Cheap? or is there better?

Thanks

Ok ok, I'm starting to be a PITA, I know that. I managed to find the parts guide for the series 3 engine. I have figured that the hose I was talking about is one of the oil cooler pipes that take oil to and from the oil cooler. Is this a possible case of just changing an 'O' ring or 2? I can't figure from the diagrams how they connect. can't see if it screw on or clamp, but I do see an 'O' ring in the diagram. Thanks everyone for helping me.

Cheers
Richard.

Richard,

#8 is the return hose I mentioned.

I could not find a S3 drawing, so as I mention, that is a S2 set up, but the basics of the gasket are the same.

The oil cooler hoses are held in with a "horseshoe" style clamp/bolt, and there is an o/ring on each hose at the filter head.

Doug will slide in eventually, I hope, and clear the air once and for all. It has been a very long time since my eyes have graced a S3 engine bay with a "half engine" in it.

That hose (#8) is a simple 1" oil returm hose, I get from Pirtek, etc.

The o/ring at the sump is GENUINE only. EAC8840 is the part number I have for it.

Not sure where in Kiwi land Jag parts are obtained. I use JagDaim in Melbourne when needed.

I got list of names from him and I searched for the web sites(I had to call anyway to catch up)

Try looking up these ones.

I have finally managed to almost certainly figure out where the oil is coming from. It is coming from where the oil cooler pipes connect into the oil filter head/block. I will change the two seals ('O' rings) once I can find some. I want to get the correct size, but I am having a tough time finding where to get them from. I have emailed all the places suggested except the parts club, and still waiting for reply's. Any other Kiwis on here know of any other places?? Ray maybe??

Any good fastener (nut & bolt) supplier should have what you need if you take the old ones with you,or the pipes.

If not try Seal House in East Tamiki, Ruby Drive from memory. They were always helpful over the phone and quick to post stuff. But they may not be there any more, I'm thinking back at least 27 years.

Another I used was The Boltholder in Matamata.

I used them both for work purchases in the 80's, but The Boltholder were good for early Jap motocycles, always had a seal to fit.

Best bet is as stated, take the O-rings to any decent hardware store or a seal/bearing place, even a hydraulic hose specialist as they always stock a large selection of orings for all sizes imperial and metric

Yip, I will do that. Now just need to wait for the weekend and hopefully nice weather to get under her and do the surgery. Not an easy part to get to...

Give it all a good degrease and pressure wash the day prior, working in a clean environment really makes the job a whole lot less painful

Ok, now for a couple of possibly stupid questions...
1) Is the only access to the oil filter head/block from under the car??
2) Do I need to drain the oil, or is it going to be mostly below the level of the oil filter in the sump?? 8 litres of oil on my driveway would not be a good look (wife would seriously not be impressed).

Cheers
