Default valve adjustment

my 86 XJ6 has 138 ,000 miles on her . she runs ok ........although i think she could do better.
would this be a good time to adjust the valves ???

At that mileage...I'd start with a compression test. AFAIK you need to adjust the valves if they are noisy.

I am very surprised you've got to that mileage without a top-end overhaul, frankly. Good advice on compression test. Valve adjustment can be a bit of a PITA if you cannot get the right thickness shims. A neat trick is to turn them over, so the little dent the valve eventually makes in the shim is on the other side and the valve bears on a fresh surface. You will definitely need a micrometer if reusing shims, because the thickness letter code wears off.

Well, it might be a good time to check the adjustment, at least. Checking the valve clearance is easy. *Adjusting* the valve clearance is a royal pain in the butt.

Agreed on the compression test.

Do both and decide from there.
