Default 4.0 Oil pressure sender or switch?

I have searched the forum for information on the notorious AJ6/AJ16 oil pressure sender and its flaky operation.
My 94 XJS 4.0 has the oil pressure gauge run at just under 8 bar when hot and driving. At warm/hot idle is nearer the bottom but the pointer flickers about a bit. So I am assuming I have the original type sender and not the dumb switch fix Jaguar later introduced.
This is the sender immediately to the left of the oil filter, correct? There is a slightly larger 'switch' to the left of the sender. Per the parts manual I think it is refered to as the oil transducer. What does it do?
It appears the sender unit in my car is leaking (as apparently they do).
So, for originality sake, can you still get the original fluctuating reading type sender, if so, where and approx how much? Or is the dumb switch the only option now and are there any recommendations on a brand etc?
Thank you in advance

The transducer is the actually the sensor that measures the oil pressure and sends it to the oil pressure gauge on the dash. The part number is LND5640AB you can still find NOS parts, just goggle the part number.

Here's one on Ebay now Jaguar Electrical Switch Relay Oil Pressure Sender Switch LMD5640AB | eBay

The other switch is actually a switch, it provides the signal for the low oil pressure warning light on the dash.

It is quite common for the oil pressure to read low at hot idle and fluctuate on some cars. My car shows between 3 and 4 bar at idle and it does fluctuate a bit but i have a friend whose gauge shows about 0 at idle but normal when running. It was complaints from clients worried about low oil pressure that made Jag change to the dummy switch. It gauge should read over 7 bar when accelerating.

On my '93 the gauge rarely changed much when it was working properly and it certainly never flickered about.
As soon as it started to wander I knew that it was on it's way out and eventually it just gave up the ghost.
I had the car 4 years and put 3 gauges in it which doesn't say much for quality.

Steve, I think it's pretty variable. I've had my car since new (20 years) and have never had an issue (said with fingers crossed )

Sorry, I meant that I put 3 senders in, not gauges. Doh!

Thanks for the replies.
AllanG, I bought that on on E-Bay, so thank you for the link.
With regards to the oil pressure light switch, they seem to go from $5 to $55! Is one from the local parts store OK, what's the sensible price for one of these?

Yep $5 will get you an aftermarket replacement switch. Fine for this application. A genuine Jag part will cost about $40

Default Oil Pressure gauge - Dead in the water

Hi guys, I'm more of a regular over at the XK8-R forum. But I may be spending a fair bit of time with you all in the future...

I'm considering buying a '95 XJS 'vert for my wife - for her birthday. I have my eye on a nice 99.8 point concours car (Rose Bronze) with 36,000 miles. From a local Jag club officer. I drove it yesterday, and it drives out really nice (no surprises there) but the oil pressure gauge is all the way over to the right and doesn't budge when the engine is running. He says it has always worked in the past and it wasn't until he had wiped down the engine after a recent 160 mile trip that it "quit." He thought he "must have pulled a wire out or something." After I drove the car, I reached under the intake manifold and felt two sensors one to the right and another left of the oil filter and the wires attached to them. Nothing was loose. I pulled each wire from their respective sending units, then re-attached them with no effect on the gauge what-so-ever.

What do you think? Did he pull at wire loose or is he pulling my leg? Is the best chance, that the sending unit is just bad? This man is honest to a fault, so I do believe that he either didn't notice that it wasn't displaying pressure as he drove it last, and/or he really thinks he accidentally pulled a wire.

Cheers!

-Barry

Hi guys,
My 01' 4.0L XKR "low oil pressure" came on as I stopped in my driveway to wait for the gate. It has 88,000 miles now. As I just barely raised the rpm to pull inside, the annunciator went out, but when I stopped in the garage it came on again. I'm running 10w30 Royal Purple, and it was 87 degrees F outside. I pulled the stick and checked it twice. This is the first time I ever seen it below the full mark in 5 years of ownership. It's showing what I believe to be half a quart low. The oil has been in there for less than 1000 miles so far, so I might be adding some 15w40 RP to remedy this HOT low press alarm at idle in gear to bring up the viscosity a little since we going to get a lot hotter than that where I live. Do you guys recommend anything else?

Mustafah Gabrial,

As mentioned at beginning of thread, it's by the oil filter. See the parts diagram attached below.
