Default 85 XJS-C Won't Stay Running. Fuel Pump Relay?

It has the 3.6L engine.

This is an intermittent problem, sometimes the car runs fine. But sometimes when you start it, it will chug chug chug and then die. We replaced both fuel pump relays. It seems when it is struggling to stay running, one of the relays is clicking like mad. Also smells like electrical burning.

I've been using this site for a little help, but still can't figure my issue out. Fuel Pump Circuit Checklist Series III XJ6

Hopefully someone has had the same problem or can help me keep this jag running.

THANKS

So whats the specs on the ground and voltages? Anything low voltage? Anything high resistance?

The checklist you're looking at won't help. I know because I wrote it. It's for a different car entirely.

I don't have schematics for an XJS with a 3.6 but a year or two ago somebody posted them. If we can find them we might be able to figure out your fuel pump problems

Broadly speaking, though, a wildly clicking relay sounds like a poor connection problem to me....which might also explain the burning smell. Poor connection = high resistance = high heat = burning smell

Cheers

Thanks for the replies! I am not entirely sure how to check the ground voltage or resistance. I have a basic multimeter, but not sure where to use it.

I noticed all the grounds seem solid mounted to the frame area next to the battery in the trunk. (relay's are in the trunk also).

I'll keep checking things out, hope I can find something! If you guys have any more advice for me I'd love to hear it. I don't know much about this car at all.
