This has been discussed a few times on the forum (XJS and XJ6 subforums) so you might be able to get some good info doing a search. In a nutshell, they can be made to work. The offset is close enough to work with some tires, and the bolt pattern is slightly smaller, which necessitates some machining on the wheels or special "wobble" nuts.

An xjs has a 5 × 4.75 bolt pattern. The same as a lot of Chevy cars.

the difference in bolt size is about three sheets of paper on each side of the bolt. the factory tolerances on wheels is less than that.

I used bmw wheels on my xjs, just had the.hub centers bored out

If you're running the BMW wheels on a Jaguar pattern, each stud and lug nut will be about 1/32" farther away from the hole in the wheel. When it comes to fitting machined parts together, that's not insignificant

On one hand, people seem to get away with it. On the other hand, if there is a failure and someone gets hurt, you're the guy that put the wrong wheels on the car.

Your Absolutely right Fast Kat. I think wobble nuts are a good quick solution.

with thw wheel problem, it will put the lug about 13 thousandths out, thats much less than a 32nd. and although this still may worry people, remember the bolts don't hold any vertical force AT ALL, the wheel is hubcentric, which means the nuts just hold the wheel to the hub

The problem is with ( and lets use Metric ) BMW are 5x120 and Jag 5x120.65 if your wheels use tapered nuts and you do up 1 nut at a time this will put the last nuts 0.65mm (26thou) out of alignment I think this is significant enough that if something is not right with the additional lateral load on the wheel studs you COULD have a failure. And I am of the opinion that for a few extra $$ I would like be sure my wheels are not going to fail at 110km/h (70mph) or worse on the track.

If it were me I would have nut seats re-cut for the different PCD or use wobbly nuts.

My previous wheels were 16" Ronal's off Mercedes 126 body, for nearly 30 years. Something tells me that chance of failure because of the .65mm is slim.

OK I was almost afraid to google wobble nuts in a work environment, but did it anyway - learn something new every day! I don't have anything to contribute except Mish, your car turned out beautifully.

Wobblies aside, is there anything that can be done to cover the Jag's rather proud front hubs?

I do like the wobbly nuts idea, since mine are all mixed and crappy anyways. Can someone tell me that are the thread size and depth for XJS?
