I have 16x8 with 245/50 16 offset front 20 rear 33

If you get the offset right then 17x8 with 255 should fit without rubbing so long as you do not lower the car.

Mine is fitted with 255/40R18 8.5J +33 on rear.
I googled coventry hornet, it says the offset is +25, I doubt it will fit with a 255 tire. a 245 should be alright.
I once checked mine but I didn't think there was 8mm more space.

17x8 +42 offset
I think it will be alright.
The inside of the tire might rub inner side of the fender wall, but can be avoided with a 5mm spacer or something.

A 8" wide 42mm offset is too large you might find the inside of the wheel rubs where the 2 panels are swaged.

8.5" with 42 should JUST fit but might be close.

Today I checked my car.
I think there is more than 10mm space inside, but mine is 18 rim and if it is 17 the wheel rim might rub the bump stop rubber even if the tire doesn't. So the spacer will be needed if you want to fit a 42 offset rim.

The last time I researched Coventry wheels, they didn't offer a wheel with a bolt pattern compatible with the XJS - what did you have to modify, if anything, to get the Hornets to fit?

Its not just the bolt pattern (PCD) the XJS has a 74.1mm center bore and 5x120.65 PCD. BMW used a 74mm center bore on the E39 & PCD was 5x120. Wobbly nuts can be used if they are legal where you live.

Wheels can be modified, center bores reamed and PCD changed from 5x120 to 5x120.65. In some places like Australia spacers are illegal so have the wheel modified with an insert bolted to back of the wheel to change offset.

Any non XJS wheel will require some modification. Even if it is only spacers. XJ40/X300 wheels fit with spacers for the front.

I have 235 50s on 18" Coventry Whitleys. Yes, Coventry makes the perfect wheel fit for an XJS; no modifications or adapters required. Mine just barely fit without rubbing the inner fender liner.

my tires are 275-35-18 frt,, 295-35-18 rears, and dont rub lock to lock!

been 20 yrs ,Maybe i was ahead of the curve back then, should i go to smaller tires?

this whole thing about tires and wheels is just a personal thing, and something to talk about.

to each his own, really all they have to do is go down the road, and make the owner happy!
