Default Newbie here needing to replace fuel lines

I have a 1993 Xjs convertible that I just acquired in a barter deal. It's very nice inside and out. I have been working on a few smaller issues and have them fixed, but the gas smell is horrible and I have read on here about the lines seeping which creates the smell. Has anyone done this? Any ideas on cost to do this?

Not sure I will keep the ride, although it's growing on me.

I'm mostly familiar with the V12 cars. I start at the rear, work my way forward. Replace any, and every rubber line there is. Even the return lines.

Check the carpet in the boot first. Mine was full of fuel from filter replacements.

The filter is behind the spare wheel and if not done correctly fuel will spill and soak the carpet.

I will start with the trunk. Very strong smell when I open it.

MY 1993 is a post facelift and it has a fuel filter under the car, not in the trunk.
So if it smells it can be from the fuel level sender seal or the vapor hose from the top of the tank.

chiro05,

I would start by checking the pipes that are hidden on top and in front of the tank. Very likely, especially the one that is difficult to see, Then I'd check the fuel tank filler pipe connection. Then see if there is any petrol damp at bottom of tank as they get tiny pinhole corrosion and leak onto mounting pad. Then check fuel sender unit but always replace the gasket if you disturb it.

Throughout all of this, remove the boot carpet as once it absorbs the smell, it will always confuse you.

Good luck

Paul

So tonight I removed the spare tire and the carpet under the spare was damp and really smelled bad with gas. I pulled it out and left the trunk open to air out.
Do I need to remove the black plate that is bolted to protect the gas tank? I didn't see a fuel filter, but I may have over looked it. From what I could see there wasn't any obvious signs of a leak. The rubber pad didn't have any stains. Is there a pad under the tank as well?
I am concerned as to why that carpet was damp inside with what appeared to be gas. I did fill it up to the top for the first time on Saturday. Could that has caused it?

I found the overflow or vent Hose wasn't connected. The problem is that I don't see the hose to re attach it. How do I fix it?

It located just at the seal on the filler neck where it connects to the tank.
