I sort have a different sound that I prefer the car make, personally I do not really like the Ferrari type note, as said it may sound fine wide open but we never seem to drive our cars like that. I realise its being discussed before but to me the best sounding XJS I have heard has to be this one 1978 Jaguar XJS Group 44 Race Car at Muncie Imports & Classics - YouTube If I could get mine to sound like that just toned down a little, now that would make me happy.
I actually prefer the sound of Mike Roddy's old car to the sound of the Group44...not to mention that it shot cool flames out the back. Sadly, Mike and Jordan decided to disassemble the car a few years ago, so, it no longer exists.

But surely the whole point is that it is a Jaguar (sorry Clarkson, a Jaaaaaaguar).
It's not susposed to sound like a Ferrari, or an Aston, or a Cobra, or a Corvette.
Or a Prius.
It's a Jag, that's how it sounds.
Simples.

But there is no sound. Jaguar exhaust is utterly silent. Silence is not a sound. Silence is silence

You appear to drive an '88 Series III VDP which, as I vaguely recall (probably wrong again), is actually a Daimler so it's not a Jag so it doesn't count.
Daimlers are supposed to be quiet, you're supposed to waft along in a genteel fashion, not loon around with your **** hanging out round corners, tyres squealing and going like billy oh.

Cheers right back at ya!

I actually drive an XJR.

The Ser III is in my garage, awaiting time and funds for the resurection. I won't spoil the luxury aspect but I intend to slightly accent the 'sport' in the 'sports/luxury sedan' classification.

As for Jaguar/Daimler it gets confusing. I'm pretty sure that my was built as a Jaguar...which eliminates the obligation and bureden of having to be excessively genteel.

Those 100 special edition Canadian cars of 1992 were built as Daimlers and badged as Jaguars, though, for the blue-blooded ex-pats living in that country.

Cheers

This wasn't one of them.

That's one of those cars that's so ugly it's actually sorta comical...or even cute.

The car sounds good too, still prefer the crackling sound of the 44.
I must agree the tail pipe sound on the Jags is silent, I have no idea why.
Even mine now with the hotdogs on the back, no cats and from what I can gather the mid mufflers aren't factory and look quite smallish, the exhaust note is deepish but quite. It seems to be loader mid car and to the rear of the bonnet than anywhere else.
It's a pity I'm still a year or so off putting in the other motor than I could have play with different components while on the hoist.

Hearing that reminded me of the Supermarine Spitfire. In a dogfight.

seems nobody has the sound my 5.3L makes, its DEEP bassy, its loud and hoony, its sidepipe(right side only), all in my plan tho!

starting from my ported exhaust manifolds(ceramic coated), into two down pipes 2 1/4" blended into a single(each side) 2 1/2" pipes, they go into two 3" straight thru mini mufflers, all merge on the RH side of car(drivers side), and rear of mufflers all blend together into 5" by 18" turn down outlet! ALL TWELVE CYLINDERS EXIT FROM ONE OUTLET!!

the down pipe lengths are different, by about 20"s, so the sound is NOT like anyone elses, its deep and very unusual, somewhat on the loud side but not annoying.

lot of muscle car guys like it, and most car people do, idle is a big cam idle, but on the hyway, coming up thru the gears, around 4200-4500 rpm it gets into its torque curve, and
most cars move over, or the race is on!! hehe.

notice on my car, the bottom rear of doors, are round NOT square, also NO door handles, key fob opener, and of course wide body in metal not fiberglass

at 6500-7000 its a screaming sound(12 cyl. at 7000 is a sound you dont forget).

This post showed up on Facebook just now. I don't know anything about these mufflers, but, they look like just the ticket for "factory-ish" side-exit exhaust.

Google Translate translated the original Norwegian text as:

"These give the V12 sound that makes the hairs stand up on the body. Original exhaust with only pots behind was too kind ....."

When I first got my '88 Jaguar XJ-S I ran it with one set of cats hollowed out and the resonators removed...it was okay, then I got a K&N air intake to go with it. The sound improved, but I still did not like it, so I removed ALL 4 cats, the two mufflers, and the resonators are already gone.
Then I got a hole in my exhaust and decided to replace the whole thing, I upgraded the 1-7/8 inch pipe to a 2.5 inch and exited them out the side in front of the rear tires...then I decided to see what it sounded like with NO mufflers, NO resonators, NO cats, a new air intake and 2.5 pipes....TOO LOUD!! So I went back in and got the shop to put on glass pack and had him intall an X pipe.....the drone was horrid!! So back to the shop and got him to remove the X pipe and kept each exhaust pipe separate, and had him put on a rock mineral Glass pack muffler which is straight thru.............love the sound! If you like I can get you the youtube link and let you listen to the car.

JagZ, those mufflers may look kool, but flow looks a little weak!

most V12 owners, realize that a good hi-flow exhaust system is good for around 25-30hp, over the factory system!

Ron,

That's why neither of my XJSes have stock exhaust.

I'm beginning to seriously consider building a set of Group 44 style side pipes for JagZilla, with JagZilla's current exhaust setup being transferred to SpeedDemon.
