Default 89 XJS Radiator cooling fans

Good morning folks! My auxiliary electric cooling fan motor has bad bushings and I am considering replacing BOTH the belt driven and the electric with 2 electric ones. Any advice on size, etc.? Thinking will need at least 4000 CFM?

Good idea.

Lots af variations based on your market availabilty.

I used the Ford Falcon (Aussie car) 1996 to whenver, twin fan pack. Almost made to suit, slid straight in with very little thinking required to fasten it.

Switched the LH with the a/c, and the RH with the thermo switch already in the bottom hose inlet housing.

Totally agree with Grant, if you can find a twin setup from a modern car that will drop in, that is by far the easiest way to go. Also, Grant's plan on how to do the switching is the best. I had tried all sorts of ways, some with quite expensive parts from specialist places, none of which worked properly before he put me straight.
I only add that if you go for two separate fans, an 11 inch and a 16 inch will fit into the existing shroud. If you ditch the shroud a 12 inch and a 17 inch will just go into the bodywork, but it is a hell of a struggle, so 11 and 16 are the best bet. Also fitting electric fans that do not have, or cannot use, an OEM framework of some sort is a definite pain and makes the swap a whole lot harder. If you do buy separate fans go for the best quality make you can find, lots of cheap fans out there, but avoid them !
Advantages are a definite fuel saving by ditching the mechanical fan, noticeably quieter car, better tickover/traffic cooling.

I used a single fan from a late 90's Volvo, some modifications were required but biggest one was modifying the shroud to fit the radiator. I cut the shroud and added a piece of plastic to widen it, using rivets and ABS glue. It was easy. Also had to shave some depth from the shroud and it just clears the water pump pulley.

The Volvo fans (and Ford Taurus fans-another alternative) are reported to flow at least 3500 cfm. The Volvo fan has the advantage of having the relays attached to the shroud, saving money on buying extra relays.

The Volvo fan is a two speed fan, I wired the low speed setting to A/C compressor and the high speed setting to the thermo switch in lower water pump housing.

Thanks-a-lot for the info guys. I was thinking of one fan on when ignition in run, other wired to existing thermo switch. Think I would need a relay?

One fan ALL the time will run the risk of over-cooling the system. The V12 does NOT need that.

You will need 2 relays. 1 for the thermo fan, and 1 for the a/c fan.

Have a read of this, its what I did many years ago. A lot fo it is NOT related to your ask, but is what I did to mine, and that car NEVER, EVER ran hot.

It would cost 4billion to have a 96 falcon fan set up shipped from where people are driving them THANGZ...

I have read a LOT of posts about this conversion,,, I have read Ford Taurus,,, Volvo this and that - but never any specifics year, make, model etc... It's important.

Which years Taurus fan assemblies make sense for a 1990 Jaguar XJS?

The easiest and best way is to remove the OEM shroud and find two top notch fans that will just nicely fit into it, or fit with a minimum of fettling. Then fit them and refit the fans and shroud as a unit.
Grant's way of controlling the main electric is by FAR the best, and I tried all sorts of things, including proprietary electronic controllers etc etc, before I knew about Grant's way of doing it, and none of them worked well or reliably.
SPAL fans are the best, and FYI the only reliable way of measuring fan performance is to look at their amp draw. I have a 12 inch and a 17 inch SPAL, but I have no shroud. The OEM shroud will take an 11 and a 16 easily enough, and a 17 with a bit of effort.
I would honestly advise you though, to just upgrade the OEM electric only and leave the engine driven fan alone for the moment. Once your car is dead right, you can start improving it as you wish. A SPAL in place of the OEM electric is a straight swap electrically and will be a big improvement. The engine driven fan cools very effectively, but replacing it with an electric is not absolutely straightforward, requires quite a bit of rewiring, extra fuses etc etc, and is best left (I would say from my own experience) until you have everything else done!

Hey, Greg... Again, thank you... All good to know. And yes, Sage advice...

Believe it or not,,, I am close. Sometimes I cannot believe it myself. I guess many hours and miles of good right driving will be the only thing to have me completely comfortable in the seat.

I'm just planning ahead because I have to...

Tires (Cooper's), waiting to be installed. A drip or two of oil leak to fix up. Had a dead cylinder,,, most likely from 2 years of idling while never being truly driven,,, but fixed that with the help O Grant... A fouled plug - new NGKs going in this weekend. Need to get a new AC compressor. Have a set O new ball joints that will go in this weekend, if all things go to plan. Idle and RPMs are perfect and predictable. Lots of good things have happened.

As it is now,,, weather here has been in the 40s 50s,,, she runs right cool. But yeah, not sure about 70s 80s and 90s weather.

I control my AC relay with a toggle switch. I did everything I could to figure that problem out and never did. Toggle works... And, occasionally, my voltage will take a deep dive with lights on, a blinker, brakelights and fan running on low with my NEW stereo on at the same time but ehhh,,, it perks back up with a tough on the gas. Regular operating voltage about 13.7 to 14.2 (have a small digi meter on the console... I would CERTAINLY be worried about amperage draw with a E-Fan set up...

Anyways,,, gotta plan ahead on tight budgets,,, and it will be something I do, for all the well documented reasons...

I will start looking into everything you just mentioned! And, I appreciate your direction, as always and right from the beginning... Peace ☮️

I fitted Twin Electric Fans from an XJ40 on my 89 XJS which came with their own Shroud, that was surprisingly easy to fit once I had worked out the best way to do it, where although they worked ok they made the Car sound like a Sewing Machine and so I took them out again and then went back to a Mechanical Fan

As for the XJ40 Fans I now use those as a Fume extractor whenever I do any Welding

ps... Believe it or not (I say that a lot, lol) I completely believe what you say about the sewing machine and I hadn't considered that at all...

What bugs me is the time it takes to warm up, the fuel it costs and the amount of harm (real or imagined) that is done on such a looooong up to temp time. It's early spring, 40degress in the AM and in the 6-7 Mile drive to work the car is just warming and the AAV is just coming to a close. That can't be good.

Thanks to you both,,, big time. Or BIGGLY,,, as my commander and chief used ta say.

Warm up time is nothing at all to do with the fans. It is to do with the thermostats, the volume of coolant, and the accuracy of the gauge!

Hmm. That mechanical blowing fan at start up has no impact on initial cooling? It must have something of an effect, no?

Those Electric Fans were as noisy as the GF's Hairdryer!

'Cherry Blossom' just didn't sound like a proper Car anymore, opinions vary but as for me I'm not a big fan of those Fans

No. The coolant is recirculating via the cross pipe and not entering the radiator at all until the thermostats start to open - which they do not do until the coolant is getting warm. Have you renewed them in your refurb work yet JJJ? if not it is worth doing, but the right ones are essential, and not all of them labelled as Ok for the V12 actually are, because their opening length is too short.
Grant will advise on how to check you have the right ones if you do change them. I use Stant superstat 45398, but as the thread link below will show, you need to drill a bleed hole in the rim.

I did replace pump, hoses and thermostats,,,really cleaned out and flushed the rad, as guided by Grant, way back when. So far,,, she's cooling just fine and always has. There were days where I was doing stuff on the hottest of day with her idling... I know that's not best but she never really got hot.

So stop worrying JJJ and enjoy the car! I think you must be the only V12 owner complaining the car runs too cool! Remember there are about 40 US pints (36 imperial pints) of water in the system and it has to be warmed up, and that takes a goodly time. This fact is one of theb reasons the V12 cannot meet modern emissions targets. It is fine when hot, but takes too long to get there, and the cold-start phase is the most important metric for the legislaters. That is the main reason modern engines have such small coolant capacity, and the reason a modern engine will cook in a heartbeat if there is a leak.

Haha,,, yes, worry wort. I promise you I am enjoying and will more ONCE I have tires that are not 15yo after Sat. Then, when it's warmer, top down, longer halls. Me and my girl. I can see it now.

I guess the couple stories of fans flying apart,,, extra load and fuel consumption with mech fan, the want for a 100% AC system and cooling that, and heating problems in NYC stop and go traffic makes me wanna get out in front of the cooling issues. But your right... I need to enjoy more and worry less. She runs cool now, way below "N" and things are good. Cept the fact that the glove compartment is missing, lol

most modern Mercedes use 3 electric fans(NO mechanical fans). some 4 fans for cooling the new HID headlights!
ALTHO a few yrs back , Mercedes said they would pay 1 million dollars , to anyone who cool there engines and cars A/C inside!
on a 100F afternoon sun ,idling in traffic? SILENT, no loud roar!
i have heard them from 50ft away ,here in AUSTIN Tx, parking lot of supermarkets! were they let there cars idle while shopping as much as 45/60 minutes , locked up!
now that would be a test of any fan cooling system!

i know that in Suadi arabia , they would laugh at buying a 12cylinder Jaguar , ALL would overheat when NEW off the boat from Jaguar factory!
120F, ambient YIKES!
TEXAS is bad enough for good cooling the V12s,(i know i live here).
