Default Convertible top Not falling far enough forward

Hi all,

I have a 94 XJS and the top seems to fall just short of making the proper contact with the windscreen. Is there a place to adjust the mechanism?

Thanks,

Tony

My 1990 pulls a bit more forward when it's latched - is that what you mean, or is there more of a gap? FWIW, a new top that was clearly tighter made the bit of a gap bigger, and made the latching more of a pull and lock.

The latches are adjustable. My first guess is that you need to shorten them so it pulls into position.

Also, I see you're Albuquerque. I'd be more than happy to meet up and poke at it with you.

Can someone post a few pics of a pre-facelift convertible?

I went over to Tony's yesterday and there were a few differences between his and mine. I'm wondering if someone tried to replace the top with a pre-facelift top & frame.

I'd specifically like to see pics of the latches. Also, if anyone knows how to identify one vs the other, that would be great info.

Maybe the fabric has shrunk. That would keep the top from moving forward. That's what my 89 did

That could be the case. The fact that the hooks are different, despite being the same year and engine, made me suspect that. It also doesn't lay down properly, which could be explained by the incorrect frame.

Tony's car, '94, is the 2+2. It will (should) have the smaller rear window. This allows the top to fold down behind the rear seat. If someone has fitted a top from the 2 seater with the bigger window that could be the problem as it may be adjusted to far back to allow it to sit behind the rear seat.

The glass lays flat behind the rear seat. It's the arms that don't fold all the way down.

Since both of ours are '94s, we're going to compare our cars side by side and see if we can spot any differences.

There needs to be a bit of a gap when the hood falls naturally forward, and the latches enable that to be pulled in and taut.

As mentioned the latches are adjustable enabling you to get the tension optimal. Have you tried adjusting the latches?
