The very first book you should get is one that you can download and wont cost you a dime!

Kirby Palm's - Experience in a Book: Help for the Jaguar XJS Owner
Kirby Palm's Jaguar XJ-S Help Book

This is a fantastic book and will keep you busy for many days. We all owe Kirby a great debt of gratitude for making it available.

After that you can get the repair manuals.

I bought a CD containing a variety of factory shop manuals from Ebay, but as you may have read the factory books do have some drawbacks - some info is vague, maybe outdated too. For example if I remember correctly on of the first steps to removing the radiator is to discharge the freon from the a/c and remove the drier? from the top cover, not actually necessary to do. Still very useful if you don't treat everything in there as written in stone.

Kirbys book is great, but not so much a repair manual as a reference source - by that I mean it doesn't have a lot of step by step procedures for how to do a specific repair, but has a ton of info as to how and why things work the way they do and recommendations on what to do and why. Good to just read, also good to refer to the section that applies to what you're working on later. And almost unbelievable for something so useful, it's free!

I think Haynes also made a manual, but I haven't used it.

The factory parts catalogs are very useful as well....mostly for the good illustrations.

Kirby's book has info and advice that you'll never see in any service manual!

Cheers

What Doug said. Also the Kirby pdf has a section where he talks about the various manuals like the electrical diagrams, so start there

The Jaguar XJS Workshop Manual 1975-1988 1 2 includes HE Supplement by Repair... | eBay
