Heh Grant, you mentioned the Goose doesn't have the above mentioned collision bracket on right?

Another advantage of buying a car that has gone through the hands of the Great G.F!

You are spot on, that bracket is somewhere in the shed.

Side note.

"That shed" is about to undergo a clean out. The Minister for Finance reckons I deserve a newer model (shed that is) with provision for a hoist. She understands that even us one legged warriors will NOT stop Jaguar stuff, so lets make some things a tad easier.

There will be lots of stuff going, and I will post all that somewhere on here when the time arrives.

Ok guys. This is partially in thanks to Greg in France in this thread here for putting me onto this magazine:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...dition-136008/

Got this out of the back, which is a service guide. Interested to know how you guys rate it. It seems pretty good:

Ok guys. I'm just figuring out what I need for my service this time around for those that don't mind checking over my list:

* 10 litre change of oil using 15W40 + filter. (I'll be sure to pre-fill filter!)
* Greg in France's Dizzy Spindle lubrication (see previous posts)
* Remove air filters & wipe out throttle bodies with alcohol and rag
* Also gonna do some of the inspections as per my guide in the last post that I found

Don't needs:
I don't need to do coolant as this was done only a few months ago.
Spark plugs done late last year so should be good too.
Brake fluid flushed only a few weeks ago.

Not sure:

* Fuel filter. Must check with the Wizard of Oz if she's due or not.
* Air filters. Should I just blow them out? They look pretty good.
* Transmission service. Is this just fluid flush and change filter also or is it more involved? Mine is due soonish but wondering if I should leave it for a separate day.

One thing I overlooked is the diff oil. I didn't even realise it even has oil According to my little service guide (see previous post PDF and picture below) it recommends doing it every 20 000 kms.
Thoughts? Recommendations on what oil you would use?

N.B
[Not sure about the power steering fluid. Just before I left for work I heard some creaking when I was going full lock on the steering wheel. I checked my PS fluid reservoir and she was practically empty. I topped her up with ATF same as my trans fluid. Does this need to be flushed or anything or should it be ok? Steering is now creak free ]

As always guys I appreciate all your help if you have time to read and answer. Cheers

Don't needs:
I don't need to do coolant as this was done only a few months ago. agreed
Spark plugs done late last year so should be good too. quite OK
Brake fluid flushed only a few weeks ago.quite OK every 2 of 3 years is fine

Not sure:

* Fuel filter. Must check with the Wizard of Oz if she's due or not. change it and the sock filter in the sump tank unless done in the last 2 years max
* Air filters. Should I just blow them out? They look pretty good. change them unless you are certain they are not more than 2 years. be careful to get the right ones, the solid plate across the filter on the INSIDE surface MUST be opposite the throttle body. There are two sorts that look identical but this plate is in a different place on each. This prevents the throttle being jammed open by the air filter being sucked into the body
* Transmission service. Is this just fluid flush and change filter also or is it more involved? Mine is due soonish but wondering if I should leave it for a separate day. As you have the easily removed sump (the Grant Francis fix) a fluid change every 3 years or so is a very good idea. If you do not know when it was last done, do it.

One thing I overlooked is the diff oil. I didn't even realise it even has oil According to my little service guide (see previous post PDF and picture below) it recommends doing it every 20 000 kms.
Thoughts? Recommendations on what oil you would use? Just top it up with castrol limited Slip diff oil - even available in Oz:
CASTROL AXLE LIMITED SLIP 85W-140 | Castrol Australia | Products | Home

Finally, grease all 10 pionts on the rear axle, very important: 4 on the drive shafts (one each end) four accessible under the diff through the tie plate holes, and one each side on the bottom of the outer lower wishbone fulcrum in the hub casting

Of course, I bow before and defer to Grant's suggestions when they come![/QUOTE]

Greg thank you. You are a champ.

I really appreciate your feedback

Mate I'm confused in the picture I posted about changing the diff oil. It looks like he is letting it out from the bottom (a sump plug?) but where do you top it up? Above the diff itself?

Are the air filters specific to the XJS or are they a generic type?

So the transmission you just let the plug out and out she comes, then top her up in the filler bottle in the engine bay?(correct?) Is there some type of bleeding process involved with this or is she sweet?

Thank you again

Paul,

Greg has nailed it good and proper.

The air filters were new about 3 weeks before you got it. YES, they are specific to the car (as in any car), and you will need the NO ABS filters, or else that metal plate is in the wong place. TAKE CARE WITH THE FILTERS, as the Goose has the BIG throttle discs. When you sit the new elements in place, open the throttle by hand (engine OFF), and make sure that the disc does NOT jam on that baffle. From memory you will be OK, but having it jam at full throttle sounds hilarious, it is NOT. If they do touch, then a simple dimple bashed (tapped lightly) into the plate will give the clearence needed.

The diff has a drain plug, and a fill plug. Now the fill plug is reached (you cannot see it) up on the rear tin cover of the diff, on the RH side, and is easy to get at, NOT. You need a 1/2" open ended spanner to get it out. It is in the same place as Clarkes S1, and he has got at his lately, so he will know exactly where to feel for it. Up above that fill plug is the diff breather. I cleaned that about 1 year ago, so it should still be fine. Oil leaks abound when they plug up.

NO drain plug for the trans on the Goose. I never got around to fitting on, slack that I am. So pan off and get drowned is the way it is done, like an initiation. The trans fluid is about 18 months old, and is Synthetic ATF. I would leave it until about the 2 year mark, but it is your car. Filling is via the tube that the dipstick (Red knob) is stuck into, and is on the RH rear of the engine bay. No bleeding required for the transmission, it does it all by itself.

Grant maaate. I can always count you. Cheers bud.

Mate those air filters still look real good so I might just give them a blow out.

The trans I might leave then until a bit later on. More time for beer with Clarke

Thats cool about the Diff. I forgot the XJS shares alot of the same parts as the XJ6.

Mate do you think I will need to do the fuel filter this time around?

Thank you again mate. Really appreciate the advice you always give.

Fine with me to leave the trans and diff for next time, just check the diff oil level and consentrate on the beer!

Just need to know what oil filter it is, I know for mine I couln't get one in Brisbane last week off the shelf. Had to order one in, so I got mine from Jagdaim. Which filter is it Grant?(part no/Brand) Ryco Z133 ? or equivilant.

Fuel filter, is it specific or will a generic inline filter do the Job,and how many are there? Ryco Z168 or R2045P or equivilant.

Main thing is you need to arrive with an oil filter, best I could get local was about 3 days. Everything else is at my local.

Grease the drivetrain while it is off the ground too.

Sounds like a plan Clarke, your a true pal! Thanks a mil for the help. I always come back from your house inspired to tinker more ( And with a hangover lol!)

I found my list on the laptop (keep a printed copy in my boot at home in the Goose) of what parts she uses.

Looks like Z133 (Ryco) for the oil filter
Z168 for the fuel filter
Oil: 10W40 Magnatec
Diff oil: Synthetic 85W140 LSD compatible.

Fuel filter and fuel pump less than 1 year old.

Z133 is the oil filter, as said, or if one is found Z113. The Z113 has a HUGE hex nut on the bottom and that makes removal real easy, but Ryco superceded the number to Z133, and deleted the nut.

Only 1 fuel filter, behind the spare wheel.

Clarke,

Magnatec if its on special somewhere. Supercheap etc, maybe.

15W40 also OK, and I would not be getting overly fussing with what it gets, really. Just not 20W50. I would stay with Semi Synthetic, no need for full Syn, and definately not mineral.

I also reckon that the amount of use the Goose gets, or does not get, I would be dropping that oil at about 3 times a year.

I was thinking of picking up a couple of these tomorrow, plus at Repco I get another 10% off for being an RACQ gold member. It should quench the thirst.
