Default Importing an older Jaguar from Canada

Hi,

Of course, it seems that I never take the easy way out or that I'm a very picky buyer .
I may have found a beautiful 77 XJ-C located in Canada, and I was wondering if any of you have ever imported an older car from Canada how difficult was the process and what were the major hurdles. Any tips would be gladly appreciated.
If it's too costly or complicated, I will just forget about it.

Over 25 years old for the Feds, no prob. Not sure if California can make it difficult emissions wise though.

A 77 will need smogged for CA. Is it a 6 or a 12?

You're in the XJ-S section, but you worded it as an XJ-C, ie the 2 door XJ coupe only made from 75 to 77. If it is a coupe, have you had it thoroughly apart to inspect for rust? These things were rusting as they rolled down the production line, so if its seen any nasty weather in Canada, things may not be in great shape.

Hi thank you for the reply
I was also looking at a 1992 XJS too
So you believe a 77 XJ-Coupe-6 will never pass the smog test in California?

Not out of the question. If it was built to the Canadian market, it was good for the US. If destined to Europe or elsewhere, Mebbe not.

Equipped with a catalyctic converter, air pump, etc. if so, if it is in good tune, it will pass CA Smog inspections.

A way to check is through BAR, Bureau of Automitive repair. Charged
with the administration of CA SMOG regulations. And, check with DMV HQ in Sacto for detail on registering a car from Canada.

Many cars sold in Canada have been sold in the USA with no huge hurdle.

Some great cars, and some far from it. The snow and salt does devour many....

well. thanks! I 'll be in Canada in a few weeks and if the car is still up for sale, I will have it inspected by a third party. I will also check the links you guys have sent me.
I was hoping to get a reply from a member that has imported a Canadian Jaguar before.
Yes, the car was built for North America so that is indeed a plus.

Canadian spec cars (not just Jags) meet the US 49 state pollution spec. As to whether the car also meets California spec is another matter. I'd want to be 100% sure before buying such a car. I think your DMV is the best place to start.

I bet buying the car in Canada is a great deal. American $$$ goes a long way here. But don't tell anyone as I'm not done buying Jags yet. Lol

Didn't say it wouldn't pass, but it is something that needs to be thought through, nothing else.

We brought a 12 cylinder car from Ohio that had never seen a smog machine in it's 40 year life to California, and we got it through the SMOG test, so the 6 is more than capable of passing, assuming a whole heap of things, ie cats are ok, engine is in good shape, etc, etc.

My main concern would be the rust...... so I hope/assume your 3rd party inspection will get all over that......
