Default start up noises

My 96 xjs 2+2 has always been slow to show oil pressure at the gauge upon start up. There was always a short top end clatter (valve train?) until the gauge showed pressure. Recently this has been accompanied by a bottom end knocking until pressure comes up. Once pressure has registered all is quiet, engine runs smooth and uses no oil between changes. Currently 72 k on the OD. I have tried various oil filters with anti drain back valves. This helped briefly but the problem has returned. My start up procedure now is to key the ignition until the motor fires up, quickly shut down and repeat 2 more times. This puts pressure to the guage and on start up all is quiet. If I don't solve this prob;lem I know I will be putting a bottom end in this engine (4.0) which I really do not want the expense. I am wondering if the oil pump is the problem ie worn gears or what ever. Appreciate any feed back if any one experienced this condition. I use 10/40 synthetic oil. Thinking of 20/50 live in florida, hot weather.

Rather odd for an AJ16 engine.

The clatter you talk of is more than likely the top chain tensioner failing, which is common (see the X300 forum), and is easily replaced from outside the engine.

The knocking is a concern, agreed. My X300 (same engine) got this "knocking", not happy believe me, BUT I found that the BIG bolt through the front pulley, and threads into the crankshaft was not done up tight enough. My belief is that someone had replaced the front seal and not done it up "bloody tight", I forget the spec, But I used a 3ft pipe on my breaker bar, and pulled like hell. It went up 1/2 of 1 flat, which sounds minimal, but it stopped the knock. Jamming the engine from rotating is fun, NOT. I reached down the LH side of the engine and inserted a 15mm socket on an extention through the hole in the bellhousing and located one of the torque convertor bolt heads, and that worked for me. You really got to hold your mouth right coz you cant see this hole.

I run 10W/40 all year round, both cars, and summer here is 44c+, and no issues.
