Hi there, just got a barn find xjs. From what I can see the vin number is 2W1112BW. Think the car is quite early, maybe 1975? Does anyone have any ideas? Am located in Melbourne, Australia. Thanks.

Welcome.

It would be a real early one, full stop.

The "BW" at the end is for BW12 transmission, and they were only on the first few that I am aware of.

They are more commonly known as "PreHE" in Jag talk.

Good ones are near impossible to find, so get it right and it will reward you with heaps of smiles, just ask Paul with the Goose, who will slide by eventually, He tends to live in his Jag when he is back on land.

Make yourself known to Doug or Bill at JagDaim in Melbourne, lots of info and bits in that place.

Thanks Grant! I was aware it was the BW box although I didn't care as I want to change it to manual. Plenty of nasty jobs to be done before then though. It has sat for over 20 years, and looks it! I will post pics for all to laugh at, I promise! Grant, we may have met, did you ever work for Sovereign motors?

Manual is a popular conversion for the BW12.

Nope, not me. Customer, yes.

Pretty rough. Engine turns over, oil looks good. Have pulled off intake system to tidy up, new hoses, etc. plug holes are full of crud so will clean and soak before plug change, compression test.

I thought it was looking like a good buy until I saw ........

......... someone's nicked the radio! ( )

The Australian sun certainly takes its toll on paint and trim but I'd swap that for the effects of English rain and road salt.

Good luck with the project.

Cheers GGG,

I know it looks bad but apart from the front floors and the boot floor needing some work, the structure is pretty good. It has 57000km on the clock and I'm wondering if it's correct. Mother nature has done the worst of the damage, I had a look on top of the intake valves and it says low mileage. Doesn't mean a thing of course.
Much cleaning to do before anything else.

BigD,

2W1112BW is definitely a 1975-build car. Well done, great find!

It might even have an 8S10xxSx engine number! Although it's more likely to be an 8S11xxSx number.

Look after her!

Paul

Cleaned up ok.

Replaced all fuel hoses and injector seals as leaking.

Cam covers had been leaking badly so I thought I'd replace the gaskets before the intake went back on. No gaskets, only silicone, everywhere. half moon seals rock hard. Looked like it hadn't had an oil change or a decent run since it was new, full of crustiness.
Compression test results ranged from 60 to 155! It could just be sticky rings but I might just stick it all back together and make sure it starts and runs before I strip it down. At least that lessens the chance of chasing down problems after a rebuild.
Cooling system full of muddy waters, the liquid, that is. Water pump sealed with, you guessed it, silicone! The wiring in the valley all brittle and ready to be chucked. Happy days!

Cleaning up nicely already. I think this is the first time I've seen an XJS with a cracked dashboard.

So, fuel pump relay. Trying to get this thing moving, I have 12v constant at the fuel pump relay, wiring diagram I have suggests this is correct. Does this ring any bells, I wouldn't have thought a 'hot' relay was correct?

Since someone's 'nicked' the Leaper, you're ahead on points already!

ha ha ha ha

I'm with ya there mate!

But in all seriousness the 75 never had either. Should have no hood ornament if it's going to be "period correct"

Up to the individual I guess but I like mine to be as close as possible/practical as the year it came out.

So that would mean rear badges you'd only have XJ-S badge and no V12 yes?

Also...how is it the coach stripes are still intact....I'm jealous!
