Default Oil Pan Gasket

Hi Folks,

Been a while since I last checked in. Been lurking though but not much going on here in the winter. Anyway....

For awhile now I've been wanting to take care of an oil leak which seems to originate around the oil pan. Bought a new gasket for it (EBC 9623) which is paper, and asking around, paper is the only choice. Well, I finally get around to dropping the pan and....... no old gasket! Just metal on metal. No sealant either, nothing. So it gets me wondering, has anyone else ever seen this? And by the way it's a '94 6.0 V12.

Next chance I get, I'll be putting it back together. Gasket plus some dressing.

Another question which came to mind after getting the pan off. Is there a sequence for tightening down (actually, up in this case) the fasteners?

I went gasketless on mine for the tin pan and the sandwich plate.

I simply used RTV Hi-Temp Red (at the time), and ensured ALL the surfaces were CLEAN, and oil FREE.

Those tin pans are notorious for NOT being "flat", and leaks will always happen.

A 4mm?? (I did NOT measure it), bead all the way around the pan, sit the pan up, FINGER tight the 4 coner bolts, go away, come back a few hours later, I left it over night, then tighten those 4 a 1/2 turn, and install the rest.

Sandwich plate was done the same when the engine was out.

Then I did the trans pan the same, whoopee, no more trans fluid leaks.

Outside the square, as we Aussies do, the camcover seals on all my V12's and XK 6 cylinders, are gasketless, bar the "D" seals. Dry engines, what a blessing.

I would NOT use that paper gasket, Jaguar upped that part to the newer Gortex style a long time ago.

I will be replacing my sump gasket soon , already purchased the new type , The reason for this reply is that I read that oil seeps upwards through the sump bolts and threads and to seal the threads with a non hardening sealant , I am going to use permatex #2.Obviously the threads have to be cleaned free of oil . I don't know if your model has the same sump configuration but thought I would let you know anyway .

Hi MATE , I need to clarify regarding the bolts I mentioned earlier , the bolts that allow oil to leak are the sandwhich plate bolts . You did not mention changing that gasket ( I am not ) so in order not to disturb that gasket remove the bolts one at a time and then seal the threads that includes the ones within the sump area . Permatex recommend a primer , acetone does the same job . Also apparently the type of bolts Jag used can damage threads so caution is necessary with bolt replacement .
