It would be a 420G or XJS, and I'm steering towards the XJS since her indoors saw yours (Paul) and likes them. Not that one is in the budget but this one has been steadily dropping in price.
It's just up the top of hill where yours overheated

With 2 XJ-S's in the fleet (thinking there will be more) there is a XJ6 VP that I have been eyeing for the wife. That would be a great summer driver for her but because of where we live its looking like a XF 3.0 AWD is in our not to distant future.Has to be a Jaguar. Now all I need to do is build another garage.

I'm curious, why do you prefer the earlier XK8s?

Some people do prefer the car pre-facelift. Something to keep in mind, if you do look at an earlier car, is the 4.2L became available starting in 03. So perhaps look at an 03 or 04.. You will get the pre-facelift aesthetics with a better drivetrain.

I did actually buy an X300 XJ6 3.2l Sport to be my daily driver Jag. Sadly He died in an accident a week later. So I got Rusty... A 1997 built 1998 XJ8 3.2l. So enginewise the same size just with more power and rust
So I went from 1/3 V12 via 1/2 V12 to 2/3 with in 5 weeks Still kept the power below that of the mighty XJ-S so it doesn't feel slow
