Didn't want to have to start a new thread on this, so I'm reviving this older one.
The sleeve on my glove box lock just broke and popped out. Indie is ordering a new one.
Any idea of cost on this part??
Thanks,
tnt10

Well, just had the plastic part around the glove box lock replaced by my indie mechanic.
The part was $125.00. Labor for 3/4 hour work was $97.50.
The entire glove box had to be removed to replace all parts.
Good news, such as it is, I had the mechanic fix the dropping glove box door while he had the glove box out, which he did following the info I had gleamed on this site about how to do it.
So for $222.50 , not only was the glove box lock plastic surround replaced, but the broken glove box door damper was repaired!
Actually worked out pretty well.

That actually sounds like quite a bit more than it should. The glove box removal is a whopping four screws. The fix to the flop is to put one small screw where the post broke off. I guess maybe the replacement of the lock sleeve was the biggest charge? I've not looked at that.

5 screws actually so you would have to add another 5 seconds or so.

I fixed mine a few weeks ago and went with the tie wrap around the arm method mentioned on another thread as it is less invasive.

It always takes me a lot more time getting that thing back in, than taking it out. I've done it 3 times now, so you'd think it would be easier, but no, its always a pain to get back in.

Considering the plastic lock surround was going to be about the same amount to fix, the addition of the damper repair was probably 5-10 min more in labor.
Still worth it to me, as I'm not handy and would never have fixed the damper issue myself.

My XK either doesn't have a glove box damper or the damper is broken. Can you chime in on this? Do you have a damper on your glove box? Mine's an '07 (US model year).

This is a RHD glovebox, removed from the car, LHD will be a mirror image.

The damper is the white tube on the back, there's a string which goes around and attaches to a clip, which always breaks. On this car I just hooked the string onto another spot, it's a bit too strong but works ok.

Both the upper mounting screw locations on this one were broken by someone previously.

There are five T30 torx screws holding the glovebox in, two at the bottom, two at the top (access from inside the glovebox) and one on the side, behind the plastic end cap of the dashboard which nests into the cutout of the door card.

Your damper is broken, or as Cambo says, the string coming out of the damper is no longer connected to anything.
Had the same problem on mine when I bought it. The wife said 'how come the door just drops down?'. Did research on this forum and found workable solutions.
Took out the box and repaired it (hardest part, for me, was getting the box reinstalled). Works great now.
