Removal of Gear Shift Knob 2009 XKR
Hello Everyone:
I want to change the gear shift knob on my 2009 XKR Convertible from the leather/chrome to one of the 2009 Jaguar Accessory gear shift knobs which I purchased from a seller here on Jaguar Forums. The new knob is the Jaguar "UNIQUE" which is in the 2009 Jaguar XK accessories catalog.
I would think that I just turn the current gear shift knob to the left and remove it (unscrew) ....but I can't seem to turn it off the gear shift chrome post.
Does anyone know how to remove the leather/chrome knob for replacement?
Any help is greatly appreciated. The one I want to remove is pictured below (leather & chrome) and the new one I want to install.

Although it does not seem correct, your gearshift knob DOES just unscrew - just the knob, not the cone-shaped chrome plinth under it. Just keep unscrewing it, You will be left with the chromed shaft and the cone-shaped plinth. The new knob is just screwed down on to the shaft.
I can confirm this because I changed the shifter knob on my own not long ago.

Greg:
I will be unscrewing the chrome and leather gear shift knob. Is that what you are referring to? I take it you are saying the shift will remain and have threads on it for the new Unique knob shown on the right side in my photos.
Please confirm if you would.
Thanks for the input.

I think my X350's gear knob had a small grub screw on it and it looks like my '07 XKR has at least one as well. It looks like there is one in the attached photo and I can feel something around the back of the knob as well.
I am pretty sure I used a small allen key on the X350.

Richard: to confirm: My 2007 XK had the normal walnut/leather knob but the leather was in the Caramel colour of the interior - not good, in my opinion. I replaced it with a black leather/chrome R knob (of identical design). I removed the original knob by simply unscrewing it! the knob comes off by itself, leaving the straight chromed shaft which has a small cone-shaped plinth at the top, immediately under the threaded portion of the shaft. There is no set screw. When the knob is screwed on to the shaft it sits down on this chromed cone. But all this is irrelevant: the point is that you simply unscrew the leather/chrome or leather/wood knob and refit the new one.
I can send you a photo if I have your email.

Ok, I am having a very difficult time removing my gear shift knob to replace it. It appears that Jaguar uses a Locktite type threadlock to adhere the gear shift knob that is presently in the car as pictured above. I can not twist it counterclock wise hard enough to remove it. There is no set screw.
I need to try to find some sort of product that dissolves the threadlock. I removed the black rubber on the current knob and there are some tiny holes that I could squirt or inject some sort of dissolver. I already tried some WD40. No luck.
Any suggestions for breaking the material loose used to hold on the gear shift knob. One would think just turn it to unloosen, but I just can't do it, and I am afraid to take a pipe wrench to it, to remove it.

Now I'm not RTFM !
Rats - I just re-read your post and you have an XKR (ie 'Supercharged' in the manual page I posted).
Sorry - no locking coller.....
On the next page it says (for XKR):
'Apply threadlock if the selector lever knob is to be reused.'
Hopefully it was originally Locktite Blue - that just required effort to remove. If its Locktite Red you're kinda screwed - that needs heat to remove it.....

Have you tried asking a local dealer/parts/service dept how they would remove the knob?

Got the current gear shift knob OFF, finally.
Thanks everyone for the input. As Gregory above stated it was on with the red threadlock, I also applied heat, since it was an aluminum gear shift knob. I heated up my wifes iron and held the iron to the aluminum until it got real hot, then used a pair of rubber pliers to twist the knob off.
It was not easy, but much better than trying to turn by hand. So, I will install the new Jaguar Growler gear shift knob, part # C2P9343, which was originally shown in the 2009 XK sales brochure as an accessory shift knob.
It sure looks nice, and so much better than the back aluminum leather shift knob that came standard from Jaguar. Also thanks to Jonathan C, for finding the gear shift knob (new) and sending out to me.
Thanks again everyone for the responses and input. The Jaguar Forum here is a critical source of information for owners of the Jaguar brand. It is an awesome site for all.
Owning a Jaguar can be a very steep learning curve as I am finding out. It is however, one awesome automobile..

I Want One Too!
I have a 2009 XK and I would like to buy the same Growler gear shift knob, part # C2P9343, as described in this thread (and as shown in the '09 Jag Accessory Booklet described as the 'Unique" shift knob. Are they still available thru my Jag dealership? If not, how can I obtain one? Thanks.

Simply Google the Jaguar part number and it will take you to several dealers that have the knob. You should be able to find it for about $68.00 to $70.00.
It looks great, and in my opinion so much better than the standard installed black leather and aluminum knob that came on the car.
Here's a link for you.

I am away from the Jaguar as I am presently traveling, but will do so when I return.
I can tell you that I believe Jaguar should have installed this shift knob on all XK & XKR back in 2008 & 2009. It looks so much better than the original installed one, and this was sold as an accessory that you could have had back then.
I would install this Growler Gear Shift knob on any XK or XKR that has a shaft.
I will get photos as soon as I can.
