Default Exhausts through rear panels

I have recently bought a 1952 xk120 ots roadster that has had trial, rally, circuit history. I noticed a bad filling job on what looks like 2 exhaust holes in the rear wing. its the original wing. Hardly anything on Internet about this apart from a comment about the Haddon/Vivian car that had the same system. It mentioned that Jaguar would do this for clients who were going to trial their cars as it raised the clearance. Anybody know anything?
