Default Air Intake Hose Repair

I made repairs on my air intake hose 3 times before I found one that I seems to be holding up. You can find it on my page under air intake hose repair.

Gus i have one better. Cut the bellows completely out and replace it with a piece of plastic tube. the tube I used I got from pep boys in the aisle with the custom airintake products. I bought a 6" tube and 2 silicone hose sections, and 4 breeze hose clamps. I have a pic some where I'll send it to you. Or find the post that shows it.

Look in meatmans post "looking for pics of white coupe with white rims" Scroll thru and you will se some pics I sent. The last pic although not close up you can see the repair I did about 4 years ago.

I drove a Volvo for years with a black electrical tape repair to a similar 'bellows' problem. Cleaned thoroughly and using a heat gun warmed the tape and bellows, wound tightly from one end to the other twice. Being black it was not even noticeable.

What do the bellows do anyway to airflow and such?

I did think about cutting it out and installing a new hose, I also did the tape but it did not hold up. I have rubber tape that will bond making one mold that we use on wire but elected not to do that because of the heat in the area. The repair I did is presently on the underside and is hardly seen from the top. I also put that short section as a heat shield. Well we will see if it works.

Bellows section permits flexibility to account for engine movement under load, while the air cleaner housing and MAFS are fixed to the chassis. A new duct hose is $66.00.

SoTxJr very likely has a melted piston in his supercharged engine from lean running.

The hose set up I put in will still have movement via the two silicon couplers. And me being a cheapass, which is an a play on words in itself, I thought there has to be a better way with common parts. The chrome tube was $8.00 the silicone hoses about $8.00-$10.00 and the hose clamps about $3.00. In the 4 years this has been on I just replaced the tube a second time because of the heat comming off the exhaust manifold. This time though I put a length of reflective heat tape on the bottom side.

thanks for the ess-planation JTO. make sense, though I was expecting some sort of thermodynamic or fluid/air mechanics lesson, you know, like the typhoon aftermarket intake.

I used that rubber self fusing tape on mine today as i noticed a split. Hope it doesnt melt, you cant even see it as it molds into all the gaps. Its good stuff

Wow. That's the best accordian-section tape repair job I've ever seen....

I wound up purchasing a new air intake duct for about $120 in October 2012. I just didn't trust a tape job to hold up during my wife's solo trips between Raleigh, NC and Tampa, FL five or six times a year....
