Smile Antifreeze

What type of antifreeze is recommended for my 2001 XK8? I don't want to pay for the Jaguar brand.

You dont want to put the wrong type in, it can react badly if mixed.
Get the Jaguar Extended Life Coolant, for five years service why would you want to take any risk. Just think how much better it feels filling the system from that Jaguar branded gallon container.

I believe that the DexCool is a compatible replacement.

Thanks for the response. I did purchase Dex Cool (Prestone) and hope it will be okay. I am always surprised at how difficult it is to get a straight answer from Jaguar.

Jaguar specs WSS-M97B44-D which is based on organic acid technology (OAT). It's DexCool. WSS-M97B44-D is also a Ford part number.

Main thing is to ensure the stuff you buy is the correct spec. and to buy from a reputable source, (not Joe Noname). You don't have to use stuff from a Jaguar-labelled container.

The coolant in my 2001 XK8 now is clear with a green tint.

I wanted to top it up, with dexcool, but now I am not sure...

So, is Dexcool green or orange?

Is there something that is "right" but green in color?

Do I need to get this green out right away?

Thats not the WSS-M97B44-D then. If it is a factory fill it could be ESE-M97B44-A. You do not want to mix the two. If it isn't factory its a guess. It could be the all makes all models type coolant.

Dexcool is orange. The coolant in your Jag should be orange. DON'T MIX GREEN AND ORANGE COOLANTS! They don't mix.

There is Prestone's all makes and models which is green/yellow and uses the same horrible chemicals as Dexcool.

Since you don't know what is in there I would recommend flushing it and putting what ever you like in there. I would recommend Zerex G-05. Long life with out the harmful effects of Dexcool.

Thanks for the replies. I added about 8 ounces of distilled water for now. I'll flush it all out and start fresh when the time comes.

I have never seen Zerex G05 anywhere here. I looked about 2 years ago, and again more recently. Will check again.

There must be something about my region, as this sort of thing is frequently a problem...

Very few nice vehicles, very little driving competence - no offense to any of my neighbors of course.

Yellow-colored Motorcraft® Premium Gold Engine Coolant, WSS-M97B51-A1 is also a G-05 coolant.

Take a look at the following link to the Zerex website. Zerex G-05 is NOT
recommended for use in Jaguars .....
http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/Zerex_CoolantChart.pdf
Use Zerex Dexcool per Zerex specifications.

I have used the Autozone Yellow mix w/ anything in all my cars w/o a problem for many many years. The single caveat is that I replace the coolant at least every year because I am either performing work on the cooling system; or as preventive maintenance care. I never reuse any coolant. Always fresh. And always distilled water... never from the tap.

All of the problems associated with Dexcool are associated with neglecting to replace coolant and are a result of leaving the coolant in five or ten years wherein it turns to what you and I would refer to as slush.

Some European owners need to be careful with the phosphate content off their antifreeze reacting with aluminum; but that type of coolant is not available in the US and is a non issue here.
