Hand brake warning

i wouldn't be surprised if it were a fuse. my seatbelt warning light stops working when something blows a fuse which affects my cigarette lighter/12V supply.
equally it could be a sensor somewhere (I would guess in the handbrake mechanism itself, but that is entirely a guess) - start checking fuses though. I would (again a guess) begin in the two compartments behind each door, starting with the drivers side.
someone else will be along soon with a more informed answer, no doubt!

The switch is at the base of the handle underneath. there is a wire that plugs on to it and if it comes off the message wont come on. Also is the handbrake actually still working? If the cable the handle pulls on is broke or stuck the switch won't actuate. When that problem happened to my car it turned out the pivot where the handbrake cable pulls on the cables going to the rear end was froze up and wasn't letting the cable move. But the handle still worked normally like all was well but the brakes didn't really set. I had to take the pivot apart and lube it and then all was well.

My prime suspect would also be the Handbrake Switch (see item 3) or its harness connections:
This diagram is from JEPC (Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalogue). The Parts Catalogue diagrams are often more helpful than the ones in the Workshop Manual!
