Thumbs down Ouch! Hit a raccoon :(

On my way to work Friday night I hit a raccoon It is never good to work on a Friday night. I came up over a rise and he scurried out of some brush right in front of me. I was doing about 65 and I swerved and braked hard. I probably hit him doing 50. He hit the undertray near the passenger side front tire. The hit sounded bad and I was afraid he somehow hit the bumper cover, but gratefully this wasn't the case. The passenger side of the undertray was almost completely ripped off and the connecting crosspiece part of the undertray is gone. He also ripped a hole out of the passenger side fender liner and the bottom is tattered from the force of almost ripping off the undertray that attaches to it. I didn't have any tools and couldn't see in the dark, so I had to limp it a few miles to work before I could remove the hanging part of the undertray, which was dragged on the road. I've attached a picture, but it is a bit hard to see. At least it isn't very noticeable to anyone unfamiliar with the nose of these cars.

Here is my estimation of what is needed:
1 X HJE6484AB - Undertray
1 X HJE4570AB - Fender liner (Passenger side)
4 X KRB100002 - "Scrivets" for Undertray to Wheel Arch
8 X KRA106001 - "Scrivets" for Undertay to Bumper Cover

My insurance deductable is too high to bother with this, so I'll be doing it myself. I'm going to contact Dan at Nalley Jaguar and Ken at britishparts.com and see what those guys can do for these pieces. It looks like a pretty straightforward process according to the JTIS, but if I remember, I will take some photos of the process. They recommend a four post lift, but I will have to make due with some ramps and a floor jack

K.Westra;
Sorry to read about your miss-hap with the fury little critter... but check these guys out also. I'd like to see what their price is versus your choice. These folks have always given me (what I feel) is a good price .

Thanks for the suggestion. So far I've heard back from Nalley and Guadin is pretty much on par with them for price...but Nalley has free shipping. Dan (at Nalley) was great and gave a quick, friendly response.

An initial search of britishparts.com makes me think it will be the price winner, but I'm not seeing the fender liner there, so they may not have one. I'm just waiting to hear back from Ken.

I assume that the raccoon wasn't very happy about the whole event either. Good luck with your repairs.

Can anyone tell me the difference between KRA106001 and KRB100002? How many am I going to need for this?

It appears that only the front two (marked 3 on the image) are rivets. Are these KRB100002?

On the undertray, are the top 8 in this image KRA106001?

EDIT: Looking at the side that is intact on my car, I think this is the case.

I repainted my XKR this winter and replace most all of these pieces, the only plastic rivets are the eight that attaches the bottom tray to the front bumper. You will need a special rivet gun. I had a Mason rivet gun with four different size holes I had to drill one out to make it work, Order a few extra pieces in case you ruin any. I have most of the numbers off the packages down at my shop, with the updated numbers. In the upper diagram on the wheel liner #1 has been discontinued.
I got the parts from Nalleys also, I used the crash manual numbers and It listed the under tray wrong for my car. Dan and Steve, even took it back and sent me the correct one with out charging me for shipping the second time. They can help you cross reference all the #'s, a lot have
changed. They are a great with service down there, and help support this forum.

The Kra106001 Is the actual plastic rivet that I referred to about a rivet gun, as the other one is a push rivet

On the 2003 and up, they started to use small screws instead of rivets. Can you even take the old rivets out of the undertray?

As far as the scrivits for the undertray. My 98 xk8 were plastic rivets that need a gun to install. They have a big size nail on that, My rivet gun did not come with the right size to install, Went to the local Lowes,(I`m bet Home Depo also) they have a nice selection to go thru, I think I found the ones you push them in,and push the center in to spread it out, worked great

I vote 'other' securing method over the original rivets too.

I would not recommend not using the original fasteners. When I bought my car the front bumper was repainted at one time and older style metal screw fasteners where used, this actually warped the front bumper on the lower side. I believe these fasteners let the plastic move during heat expansion. Plastic molecules will expand farther than metal it is less stable. We manufacturer a polyethylene sign and when attaching to metal frames you have to have the fastening system loose. When I reattached my bumper with the correct rivets then the distortion went away.

Default Skrivets??

A while back I had to remove the driver side wheel arch cover to access the washer fluid pump. The originals were past their best and I found the plastic rivets at Autozone in an assortment packet. The p/n is 961-045 "Nylon Rivets" and they are made by Dorman. It comes as a 1/4" assortment packet of 6 and buying two packs gave me enough to re-skrivet both wheel arches.

Good luck,
Hamish

Kevin,

I came in on this a bit late, but I replaced my undertray on my XJR and came upon it at Rockauto of all places. It came with the skrivets and push pins as needed. I haven't checked but they probably have one for the XK series as well. Also, with a little searching on eBay, I found the fender liners. The price for the fender liners were around $30 and the undertray was around $45. It was not OEM, but the quality is just fine for what it is.

It seems to be easier to find the equivalent XJ parts compared to XK parts. I think I know where I'm going to get the undertray and fender liner and. after all the comments, I'm convinced it will be better to find the rivets locally. It's going to be a busy few weeks with my job and since I'll be visiting my brother next week, so it may be a while before I get the parts and get this done. The nice thing is it isn't all that noticeable or it would be driving me even more crazy.

I went and looked at Rockauto a while after I made the post and found the same thing. It is funny, some sites I go to I can hardly find anything for the XJ, yet find all kinds of XK parts. Good luck with the search. The job is very easy, so once you've got your parts, it shouldn't take too long.

So I realized I never did a follow up to this. I ended up using generic rivets on the undertray and where the fender liner attaches to the undertray. I was able to reuse all of the fener liner fasteners on the new liner. The only thing is, I still haven't found the screws that go in the center of the undertray. The original undertray never had them either, so for now I'm running without.

If you are curious, here are the rivets I used: http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Det...356_0006391290
