Oil Change Interval

Oil Change Interval
This is a follow up to recent discussions about Jaguar's 10K miles oil change recomendation.
I also have a 2000 Mercedes ML320. It came with a recomended 13K oil change interval using conventional oil. Soon after I bought it I got a notice that they were having problems with sludge build up. They extended the engine warranty to 100K miles for sludge problems but also required the use of synthetic oil!
I dont see any reason why Jaguar would be any different, so would recomend using synthetic oil if you stick to the 10K change.
For myself I am staying with a 5K oil and filter change.

Please don't get this started up again! Apparently, some people think that if you do not use the sort of oil and the interval of change that they have decided is best then you are an idiot. I think that there are some people who think that you should send your oil off to be tested, to see if if needs to be changed for a cost of somewhere around $20. I can change my own oil and filter for less than that, which is what I do. I suppose that to some people, something is wrong with that too. We shall see. As for me, I think that everyone should be able to do what they think is best for them without being ridiculed by someone else who has a different opinion. I suspect that this thread will be closed shortly, as we just went through an oil change war.

It's comical what we get worked up about. I think that if you look up Pandora's Box in the dictionary, you'll probably see that debating this issue is a prime example! I say, change your oil as YOU best see fit, and enjoy your beautiful Jag...................that's what I plan on doing!
Regards to all, whether you are a -5K or 10K+ Oil Changer.

Otherwise, we're just entering into another endless 'tastes great/less filling' shoot from the hip debate.

10 K changes are what Jaguar recommend for normal driving conditions.
This does not reflect how everyone uses their cars.
If doing a lot of short trips, or being in dusty, hot or cold climates, the oil should be changed sooner.
If the car was ran from day one and never shut off, you could just replace what is used by losses and never change the oil at all.
I change oil every year regardless of mileage. Clean oil is better than 5K oil and much better than 10k oil, you don't need oil analysis to see that.

Oil is cheap, engines are expensive, but it is all down to the individual owner.
Having said that, I always take a good look at the oil when I dip the level; if I think it is getting too black and 'orrible, I get it changed. Lots of short journeys, (like I do), are very hard on oil and its capacity to absorb contaminants. Looking at my records, it seems I change oil regardless of car make at between 7 and 12 month intervals.
