Post Type (BRANDS) of coolant can I use?

For my 2000 XKR, I am wondering if anyone can tell me what type (BRANDS) of coolant can I use to top off my car? My "Engine Coolant Low" message appeared today along with the "Performance Restriction" message a few minutes later. Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm fairly new to this forum. Thanks!

I understand it would be easier to just pick up a particular BRAND but you need to check for the coolant SPECIFICATION.

Brands can cover a range of specifications, some of which are suitable for your XKR and some aren't. What you're after is:

Orange Extended Life Coolant conforming to WSS M97B44-D

This information will be on the label.

One BRAND that markets this specification in the US is PRESTONE'S Orange "5/150 Extended Life AntiFreeze".

Graham gave you excellent advice. Go with orange-colored coolant that meets the M97B44-D spec, and you'll be good to go....

I got the same message, low coolant, a month after I got my 01. I went and got Dexron and have had no problems since, it really was just low no leaks either. I think it had sat at the dealer for a while.

Uh... Dexron is automatic transmission fluid. I think you meant Dexcool.

I've said it before, I don't like Dexcool, but it is the specified coolant.

Perhaps. But, on a car that has an original spec of Dexcool, then the safest thing for an inexperienced person is to stick with it. It is the only responsible answer to someone whose experience level forces them to even ask the question.

Changing coolant types is an exercise for the experienced who understand the reasons, the risks, the consequences, the required precautions, and the required procedures.

The same caveat applies to any change from original spec coolant type to some other coolant type.

Somewhat off topic, but why do people hate DexCool so much?

Some folks believe that Dexcool degrades fittings and hoses. I've used it in our 2004 Lexus RX330 AWD SUV for years with no problems whatsoever....

It just seems, to me, to seep past nearly every connection and leave a crusty mess. Also, again it seems to me, that plastic parts in a DexCool system seem to disintegrate (or at least more quickly) while other coolants don't seem to have that particular issue. I've not seen everything but I have seen a lot over the past forty-two years and these are just my non-documented perceptions.

Actually, the Glysantin formulations like Xerex G-05 also leave white stains unless wiped off immediately. Note to readers, Xerex G-05 is *not* a dexcool equivalent. Just discussing staining.
