Default XK8 Hood Emblem Removal

How do you get the star washer retainer off from the back of the hood emblem in order to remove it?

This is a good question. I'm currently waiting for a new bonnet badge to be shipped to me. Hopefully someone will post the answer before it arrives, otherwise I'll look into it myself.

Hope it's not one of those "remove front cover for access" jobs, though it seems to be the way Jaguar does things.

On my 1997 XK8 I can feel it behind there with my hand, but I cannot get any kind of tool on it. I also don't know what it looks like. The parts book calls it a "star washer" so I'm assuming you don't use a socket, but it pops off in some fashion.

Anyway, it has to come off, so I'll keep you posted.

If I remember correctly,,, Maybe it was the BMW,,, but anyhow that STAR WASHER kinda looks like a nut but not threaded,,, it is cut and pinched single type thread,,, it required a nut driver and a 1/4 or 1/2 turn to come off... maybe slightly more...

I've got mine mounted on the mesh grill, so tomorrow when I get the car back I can look behind it and see how it's fastened. I think it's threaded and uses one of those flat, round fasteners that have the friction type edges for your fingers to grab onto. Probably has one of those bent tabs that grab the stem for a lock, but I'm not sure.

Is your badge corroded or damaged? They can be rehabed with new centers. Might be easier.

No threads, no nut, it is a simple star washer pressed over, as you pull it off it tries to dig in........ be forceful, you will bend it, I never bother with them.........

To take most off I put a knife under the badge, using the center boss as a pivot move the knife around the outside edge, this cuts all the tape, then pull the sucker until it comes off, if you want to be gentle, take the bumper off

I have done it.... too many times to remember

Got mine off by first cutting through the adhesive with some fishing line, then used a hacksaw blade to cut through the peg [ use a bit of thin plastic to protect the paint ]

Thanks! I used the "pull" method and it came off just like you said.
