Default Check. rear lights/cruise control

Hi folks,
Just experienced a light on my dash (06 xk8). It reads check rear lights/cruise control inop. I checked all my lights and they all seem to be on with the switch.. when you turn off the car and restart it the light is out for a while then it reappears. Any ideas?
On another note i've exclusively owned jags since 86 (3 v12 xjs and 2 xk8) we all know they are awesome cars. What troubles me is I have an absolutely gorgeous dark red/tan top 06 with 42000 on it. I decided I was going to try and sell it in anticipation of the f pace suv. It's a struggle to get offers over 15 grand. To me it should bring more dough than that, 17 to 18 seems more realistic. Just thought I would share that with the readers in case they have thoughts of selling their car. I love it when people critique jaguar, then when you ask them what model they have, they tell you they've never owned one.

I've moved your post from the General Tech section to the Model Specific XK8/XKR section for better visibility

As for the Check Rear Lights/Cruise control - most likely the brake switch assembly under the brake pedal - there are 2 microswitches in the assembly that could be faulty - not too difficult to replace

Yep, that's almost always the culprit when these two messages appear on the screen together....

Cut the tie wrap, undo lower nut, losen upper 2 turns and winkle out, leaving metal support in place. Check soldered connectors.
