Smile DIY complete cam chain system 2000 XK8

I have been doing a lot of planning in preparation for attacking the cam chain system on my 2000 XK8. I have already recieved a lot of help from you guys and I really appreciate it. But in my research I have come across a couple of items that bother me. My present plan is to replace the secondary tensioners only. No problem doing that, I don't think. Using the technique of raising the exhaust cam seems OK. I am concerned about getting an exact realignment of the exhaust cam and a good idle if the new tensioner does not provide the same chain tension and orentation between the two cams.

But if I get into the engine and find that I need to go all the way there are a couple of other things that bother me. Looking at the tools needed I find the crankshaft locking plug # 303531. It is a small plug and I can't figure how or where it locks the crank. Need help there. Also, I have read that removing the crankshaft pulley requires an air wrench which I don't have in my shop. Is it possible to do that job without an air wrench and use just a good break bar?

If someone in East Texas has DIY I would really like to make contact with that person. I am planning on doing this job sometime in early spring.

Thanks guys. I appreciate your help.

Default No air wrench needed

A good breaker bar does fine, I rented the tools from Fla Steve in this forum they are also available on ebay. I have a mechanic friend that did mine and he will do yours for$450 if you rent the tools.

I'm in Blue Ridge, Tx, don't how far away you are, but glad to help if possible.

EZDRIVER: Have you found the posting on this forum showing every step to do a full chain replacement--including pictures? A full replacement is a seriously large job for someone that's not a professional mechanic. I don't know that I'm adventuresome enough to take on that job--and I have a fully equipped shop. (I do have 2 grandsons that are real high tech mechanics, however.)

I've found 3 places to rent the tools:
Motorcars LTD--$150 plus deposit only 1 cam locking bar
FLA STEVE--$100 & transport 2 cam locking bars
http://stores.ebay.ca/christophersforeigncarparts. $75 plus will sell the parts to do for $700—will include tools with the parts (saving shipping fees.) 609-399-2824 tensioners $70ish

Hey!!! Thanks guys for the info. Will look for the posting mentioned. As to where I'm located my shop is in my airplane hangar at Wood County airport north of Mineola. I have completely overhauled a jag engine from a XK150S many years ago. but this looks a lot more complex.

Thanks again.
