Heated Windscreen

Heated Windscreen
There's no signs of life in my heated windscreen although the button on the climate control pack lights up. Rear screen and door mirror heating does work.
I've checked the 30 amp Fuses 15 and 17 in the Engine Management Fusebox for left-hand and right-hand windscreen heaters - both are OK.
Earlier XK8's had separate Driver and Vehicle Care Handbooks and the latter usefully listed relay functions and locations. This car has a single Handbook combining the two but this has no information on relays.
The heated windscreen automatically switches off after six minutes. There must be one or more relays and a timer to control this. Anyone have information on the circuit layout and location of the control components?

GGG - Windscreen Relays
The windscreen relays should be on the right hand side of the vehicle, just in front of the hood (bonnet) release spring, covered by a black cover box approx. 4 inches long. The front one is the starter relay, followed by the LH and RH relays. The LH will have a green/white wire going to the heating element, while the RH will have a green/orange wire going to the heating element

Thanks to itspec60 and Jag13cat for posted help and WhiteXKR for PM.
To summarise for anyone else who may have similar problems, the Heated Windscreen is protected by three fuses and two relays:
Engine Management Fusebox:
No 15 Windscreen left hand heater - 30 amp
No 17 Windscreen right hand heater - 30 amp
Fascia Fusebox- Right hand
No 16 Windscreen heater relays - 5 amp
Relay Box - beneath RH bulkhead cover
Rear Relay JA6703AA (brown) - right hand heater
Centre Relay JA6703AA (brown) - left hand heater
The black cover for this relay box is attached by a single fixing to the bulkhead and just pulls upwards to release and remove. The box contains three identical relays, the one nearest the front of the car being for the starter. If the car starts, the two windscreen relays can easily be checked by substitution with this one.
Both relays should show 12 volts between the Blue/Yellow and White/Red wires when the heaters are turned on.
The thick Green/Orange wire for the right hand heater and chassis ground should show 12 volts when the heaters are on. Likewise the thick Green/White for the left hand heater and chassis ground.
If all this checks out and the screen still isn't heating then it's either broken wires to the screen or bad elements in the screen itself.
Unfortunately it checks out on mine so I'm left with the probability of bad elements.

JJ,
Possibly not as they were only a standard fit on the UK 'S' and US 'Victory' models and an option on others.
If you do, the button is to the left of the heated rear screen button.

You're probably better off without one.
Mine has a problem with the wiring between the relays and screen, Frog recently paid $3000 for a replacement screen and trim.

Hi guys,
I have bought an XKR 1998 a month ago and now got a stone into my windscreen. The company that will replace it for me asks whether or not I have a heated windscreen. I suppose I have a usual one, but just in case wanted to ask you where to look to double check? I've heard there are some wires at the bottom of the window and also a button to heat it, but if anyone can send me a photo of how it should look like, that would be nice!

If you look closely at a heated windscreen you can see the fine vertical parallel wires embedded in the glass. I've arrowed four of them here:
Difficult to see and even more difficult to photograph!

I've been curious about seeing little vertical distortions in my windshield when the sun is low in the sky and wondered if any XKR's had heated windshields.
Thanks to this thread and GGG for detailing this for me. And, yes I do have the third button on my dash console. Just wasn't sure what it signified!
Always things to learn with the kitties.
Thanks,
Gary

This thread won't help you with those issues.
