Default How Many XK8/XKR Coupes Out There?

Hi,

I appreciate the nice response to my Jaguar Tale, how in very short span I went from casual browser of Jaguar ads to owning my dream car, a British Racing Green XK8/R Coupe in great condition, a car I'd liked since day it was released here around 1997. That thread:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...so-fast-70772/

Anyway, given that Jags were not made by the hundreds of thousands, perhaps there is info lurking to answer the following.

How many XK8 and/or XKR (or total for both) coupes were released during the run? If known, how many made it to USA, or even how many per year?

I bought my coupe for the long haul (like maybe rest of life), but I am charmed that it is the first year the "R" was made. Who knows, while few modern things ever will be collectable (people today hoard stuff so much more than they did a generation or two ago), I wonder about this car. I hear on the Auto Auctions channel of 1960's cars being considered scarce because "just a few thousand were made that year", and so forth.

regards

david

I've seen that posted on here before, so someone will probably be able to answer for you.

Hi David ,
Can't help with numbers but as I understand it , there were more Convertibles made than Coupés , and more XKR's made than XK8's , I myself own a 1998.75 MY XK8 coupé finished in the launch colour of Antigua Blue , not as rare as I originally thought , at least not here in the UK

From memory 1998 was a good year for Jaguar with a record number of XK's sold ,

Enjoy your car and happy motoring ,

Nik

Slightly different figures appear from books released mid-way through the XK8 production run but the definitive version must be from 'Jaguar XK8 - The Complete Story' by Graham Robson published in 2009:

XK8 Coupe = 19,812
XK8 Convertible = 47,013
XKR Coupe = 9746
XKR Convertible = 14,045

Total = 90,616

The same publication also gives the subset for USA sales but doesn't split this into XK8 / XKR or Coupe / Convertible:

1997: 10,045
1998: 8,045
1999: 6,976
2000: 6,729
2001: 5,137
2002: 3,935
2003: 2,905
2004: 2,806
2005: 2,282
2006: 1,148

Total: 50,048

This question arises regularly. I'd like to compile forum member results for Coupe / Convertible against Build Date if there's sufficient interest.

I'm shocked just 1100 counting all four modes made it to USA in 2006. Long in tooth? Maybe, but still.

So a total of just 9750 XKR Coupes were made and of all XK's made 1997-2006 about 1/2 made it to the USA.

Seriously, TOTAL of 5000-ish XKR coupes then in USA from a 10 year run? That is remarkable. When I see variant Camaros on the Auction channel, 5000 made in one year seems to catch attention.

Happy to hear more.

regards

david

Hey, it's always dangerous to assume, especially regarding my organizational skills

Color spaces (real world, camera, computer, monitor) can be tricky.

No, I have not checked formally, but the color is flat, non-metallic. It looks like what I've always considered BRG to be, sort of a forest green with hint of blue in the proper light. Matched up well to three other green cars parked at the dealership when I had the tensioners done.

Is there another flat green from that era?

best regards

David,

Here's the annual production breakdown throughout the run:

XK8 Production Figures- 1996 to 2005.pdf

Again, this is taken from 'Jaguar XK8 - The Complete Story' by Graham Robson although I've corrected the arithmetic which seemed to escape both the author and the proof reader!

Hi,

Thanks. Now, this might prove one of my beliefs wrong, that 2000 was first year for XKR. Your list cites XKR made en masse in 1998. Maybe only to USA in 2000 or am I wrong altogether?

Still, at roughly 50% total output going to USA we're at about 900 XKR coupes to USA in 2000 from among total ~5000 coupes to USA during entire run. Something tells me there are more big Lexi and Mercedeses (sic) out there

regards

david

As I understand it, 2006 was a bit of a phony year. The last of the steel-bodied XK came off the lines by July of 2005, and were marketed as 2006 Model Year cars in the US. So, an abbreviated run of the "2006" model. By then, Jaguar was deep into the run up to the new all-alumin(i)um XK.

XKRs were available in Europe before 2000. First year that XKR was offered in USA was 2000.

The XKR was launched at the 1998 Geneva Motor Show and went on sale in the UK in May 1998 in both Coupe and Convertible form.

I'm told by my dealer that of my year/colour/trim combination, only 200 made it to the US.

I really hope that's true.

Default How many XK8/XKR Coupes are there

I bought a 2002 XK8 this past fall. Black on Black, it had high mileage 111k. Think that was because it spent its time going between Virginia and Florida. Mileage was consistent at a little over 10k a year so snowbirds I guess. A few minor issues like crank seal leak, and a vacumn leak in the emissions system.

Really nice car, love to drive it, weekends and special occasions. Only concern is the dreaded cam follower issue on the 4.0 engine.

But now I want a newer XK or XKR to go with it.

I am having a hard time tracking down how many 1997 saphire coups had charcoal interior like mine.
I have heard there were not many blue coups but wonder why - I like the color......

Hey Pastor XK8: You may remember seeing my 2003 Jaguar Racing Green XKR Coupe in it's old stomping grounds - very near you.

I purchased my car in February of 2011 from an advertising exec named Bill in Long Beach. He was active in some of the local Jaguar car shows during the years that he owned her.

Cheers! From Kansas City, Missouri.

9,746 total XKR coupes are fairly low production numbers. So half of those came to the U.S? On a scale of 1 to 10 how rare are XKR coupes anyway?

The total production figures from Jaguar for the XKR are:

XKR Coupe = 9746
XKR Convertible = 14045
Total XKR = 23791

The split is 59.02% Convertible to 40.98% Coupe or, in round figures, there's 3 Convertibles to 2 Coupes.

The Convertible was primarily aimed at the US market and considerably more popular there. As US members who have searched for the Coupe have found, they are much rarer.

Hi Max Wedge - I am a mopar guy too. 2011 challenger RT with Mopar Exterior Pkg.
Love the Jag. Didn't see yours - looks great.
I bought XK8 coupe after little research. The owner was moving so sold it very reasonable. Had no idea how few blue with charcoal interior there are. Guess not a usual production combination. Just got the tensioners done (they were cracked and pieces were in trhe pan!

Pastor XK8, I've been looking myself for a Challenger SRT8 - I haven't found one I felt we could afford yet! Nearly every time my wife and I pass on on the road, she emits an OOOOOOOOOOhhh sound! I guess I really need to get on that, huh?

Here's my 1962 Dart - "Bart" Due for a total freshening up this summer. The local drag race track in Kansas City closed in November of 2011, so I've decided to retire a 51 year old race car to the local car show circuit. I'm not changing much. It's pure lifetime racing heritage is it's most endearing quality... I've had and raced it since the original owner and Drag Racer's widow sold it to me in 1989. Bought it out of Sonoma County, California - it was sitting next an out-building garage with a blown engine and a tarp over it. Not a speck of rust on it. Race decals still in the windows. I gave $725.00 for it. Heh!
