On my 2002 XK8 the check engine light came on a couple of days ago. It's also giving me Restricted Performance warning but only occasionally. When it says that, the car will not accelerate smoothly if I accelerate to highway speed. When that message goes off it is seems to run perfectly.

I checked it at AutoZone and am getting P2199 code Intake Air Temperature sensor. It says there is a correlation error in the IAT sensor. It also indicates that the OEM brand is Ford. I have learned that the sensor sends a signal to the power train control so when the sensor is not working properly hesitation is one possible symptom.

I can't seem to find any info on the forum about this and when I try to find the part on line no Jag parts dealers seem to recognize the name. Any help? As always, thanks in advance. This forum helps me keep my sanity.

 

I am pretty sure the IAT sensor is part of the air flow sensor. You can try cleaning it but would be better off to just replace it.

 

MAF: Mass Air Flow sensor.

Start by going to an auto parts store and getting some MAF sensor cleaner. Be careful, it is very sensitive. I sprayed mine and used "can air" to dry it off. Did this a couple of times. Do not touch the sensor's parts. Fine ever since. Be sure to replace your air filter regularly in the future.

That is why I asked to have it checked. That code is not coming up on my list and on the net it refers to an intake sensor on a ford but I am not able to locate it on xk8. I know one exists because I can get that temp reading. It may be in the MAFS as suggested and would like to see what you come up with.

 

Looks like I can buy one for about $200 but I will try cleaning it sometime this week and let you know how it goes. Can you guys point me to a schematic that will show me where it is? Thanks for the help!

 

Its in the maf sensor, the cylindrical black thing just after air cleaner housing, got a flat plug on the top.
On yours I think it can be removed from the cylindrical black thing by undoing the two screws on the top and then easing upwards.The temp sensor a thermister that looks like a tiny bead if glass with two very thin wires.

Gus these codes are always a bit of a mystery to me. I will clean the sensor and if that doesn't work I'll revisit the code.

Finally found time to pull that air intake sensor. The glass tube that hangs down was totally grey on the intake side. I bought the appropriate MAF cleaner (CRC Brand) and gave it a good spray. It has dried and it looks like there is a cloudy finish on it now. I did not wipe it but am wondering if I should. Also, if that sensor is the problem will my check engine light go out on its own? Thanks!!!

 

do not touch Buck, no matter how much you'd like to. When cleaning, spray it liberally, let it drain outward away from the opening (like tip it downward, then spray).

The CEL in your instance will clear itself after a few driving cycles with corrective readings observed by the engine control module. Not all codes clear themselves, this one will, however.

 

Thanks Matt...resisting temptation is not my forte; however, under the circustances, I will summon all of my will to do so. Thanks as always for your sage advice. Hopefully the CE light will extinguish itself and I can move on to some of the other projects that beckon.

The car is running great Gus but I drove it about 30 miles or so today and that pesky check engine light is still on. There's absolutely no hesitation and the nasty "performance" light no longer appears. We will give it a couple more days and see if the light goes out.
Hey did you see the photos I took of my convertible top hydraulic pump? I never could have attempted "fixing" the darn thing without your photos, I actually ended up just replacing fluid and it is fine, but my set up was different from what your photos show. Doesn't much matter but I am wondering if you've got any idea why the frame for mine might have been set up differently.

Good to know but your check engine light will not go out until you use an OBDII reader to clear your fault.

Yes I did see you photos. Not sure about your pump rack it looks like a 3 tier. Mine is a 2 tier but both can be a bit difficult to get to the refill plug. I worked on both 2 and 3 tier and used an adjustable wrench and turned the nut loose with the pump in place. I then used the wife’s basting syringe with a hose to refill the pump. It worked well except when she found out I used it on the car. Good thing it was HER CAR! It was not easy, your was is best.

 

OK so the check engine light went out...then I was driving on a hot day and after idling at a light....it came back on....then the weather cooled down and after drivng it a few more times the light went out....then hot weather, hot car....light came back on. When the light comes on I also get the "performance compromised" light for 30 seconds or so and the car hesitates when accelerating. Then it's fine again. I tried cleaning the sensor again but I think I have to break down and buy one.

 

Badkitty, did you buy a new sensor and did that fix the problem? I have the same reading on my 2003 XKR and trying to decide what to do. Thanks.

BTW: Is there an after market (Translation: "Affordable") replacement for the 4.2L SC MAF sensor? I've only found equivalents for the other models.
