Jaguar XK8/R Premium Audio info required
Hello
Apologises if this post is duplicated but I might originally posted it in the wrong section
I've just bought a 2000 model Jaguar XKR Convertible (one that I previously owned 15 years ago). It has the Alpine Premium Sound which is awful although I've just discovered the door bass speakers don't work so replacing them.
Anyway the problem with this model is there is only subwoofers in the rear panels and so there's no sound other than awful base.
My idea to keep things simple is to remove the subwoofers all together and replace with good quality normal coax speakers, but I understand I'll have to find the connections on the amp for the rear sound and I was thinking of disconnecting the subwoofers connections at the amp and moving the wires over to the rear L and R audio output which I assume is currently not going anywhere.
Has anybody done this or has any info on which wires to change.
I've read that there are wires in the centre console but not sure what needs changing.
Also at a later date I might want to put a subwoofer in the boot which I assume could still be fed off the amp.
Any info will be gratefully appreciated.
Kind Regards

You can find all the wiring diagrams on Gus' excellent site - www.jagrepair.com.
However, you may see from the attached page that it's not quite as simple as you had hoped.
All the speakers come from the amplifier in the boot (trunk) and there's a connector in the centre console where you could, if you so wished, intercept the wires to the speakers.

As shown in the above diagram, the Premium Sound amp (in 2000) has Rear outputs as follows:
2 Woofer outputs connected as follows:
In the Convertible to the 2 rear side Woofers.
In the Coupe to the Single, Dual Voice Coil
Center Woofer.
2 "Full range" Outputs to Side Speakers in the
Coupe only. Not Connected in the Conv.
It would certainly be possible to re-wire the "Full Range" outputs to the Side Speaker Wires in the Conv.
All these wires run thru the IC1 Yellow connector under the Center Arm Rest and could be re-configured there if desired.

Hi
Many thanks for your replies. Jagrepair.com I found to be a great website.
Regarding the problem with the premium audio sounding garbage it appears that the mid bass door speakers were dead (only had the car for a week so not going deaf).
With help for the forum etc I removed the door speaker covers and replaced the speakers with some I bought on Amazon called Base Face (around £20 each). They're 6.5" so slightly larger so had to just redrill a couple of holes on the door speaker enclosure and fitted perfectly. I also removed the speaker connector from the old speaker and resoldered onto the new ones.
Very simple job thanks to all the info being readily available and the sound is now superb without going over the top.
I will checkout the connections on the amp still as I'm curious to find the unconnected rear speaker connections for future reference.

I think I'm correct in saying that you will have the "Alpine" manufactured kit in your car - earlier convertibles (up to 1998 ??) had a system manufactured by Harman-Karden. The most obvious difference is that the HK kit has a "proper" sealed speaker enclosure on each side with provision for both bass & mid-range units. I think it is possible to retro-fit these earlier enclosures to the later cars, and do away with the Alpine speakers which I think are just bolted to a panels at the sides.
I'm not sure about connectors on the Amp and wire colours etc., but there's plenty of information on here if you do a search.
This post might help explain what I mean.
Cheers,
David.

Thanks Dave and yes I have the Alpine. The car I have I bought 2 weeks ago and it's actually the exact same car I bought in 2000. I paid extra for the Alpine upgrade and was disappointed with the rear sound because before I had the XKR I had an XK8 with HK Sound and was much better.
I will keep my eye out for a pair of the HK enclosures although I just fitted new door speakers and the sound already is vastly improved.
Regards
Rocky
