Default This may not be the place

I HAVE BEEN STRUGGLING WITH AN ABS PROBLEM FOR A MONTH OR SO. I HAD A MASTER TECH FRIEND, THAT I GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL WITH, WHO HAS AN $800 READER PLUG IT INTO MY CAR. THE FIRST TIME, WE FOUND THAT THE LF WHEEL SPEED SENSOR WAS SHORTED, SO I REPLACED THE SENSOR, AND WIRE TO THE CONTROL UNIT(NEW MIND YOU).

ON THE 15 MILE TRIP BACK HOME, FROM HIS HOUSE, THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I TURNED AROUND, AND WENT BACK TO HIS HOUSE, AND THE CONTROL UNIT SHOWED THE SAME FAULT. WE MOVED THE SENSOR FROM WHEEL TO WHEEL, BUT THE FAULT WAS ALWAYS WITH THE LF WHEEL. WE BOTH FIGURED IT HAD TO BE THE CONTROL UNIT.

I FOUND A YARD THAT SUPPOSEDLY HAD ONE, BUT THE NUMBERS WERE DIFFERENT, AND I COULDN'T EVEN LEAVE THE GARAGE, WITHOUT THE DASH LIGHTING UP LIKE A CHRISTMAS TREE. INCLUDING A FEW LIGHTS I HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE, LIKE BRAKE, BOTH TURN SIGNAL INDICATORS, AND THE LIGHT INDICATOR. THEY GAVE ME MY MONEY BACK, SO THINGS WERE JAKE WITH THEM, AS FAR AS I WAS CONCERNED.

BEFORE READING WHO WAS RECOMMENDED, BY YOU ALL, I BIT THE BULLET, AND ORDERED ONE FROM A MODULE REBUILDER IN CALIFORNIA, THAT CAME HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. IT COST ME $300, PLUS A $100 CORE CHARGE. I INSTALLED HIS, AND EVERY LIGHT THAT CAME ON WITH THE YARD UNIT, THAT HAD DIFFERENT NUMBERS, CAME ON WITH HIS UNIT, THAT HAD THE CORRECT NUMBERS.

I TALKED TO HIM FOR PROBABLY A 45 MINUTES, AND ENDED UP SENDING HIS UNIT BACK TO HIM, AND HE SAID HE WOULD SEND ME ANOTHER ABS CONTROL UNIT. I PUT A TINY RED DOT, INSIDE ONE OF THE PLUNGER TUBES, TO MAKE SURE HE DIDN'T JUST UNPACK IT, AND SEND IT BACK TO ME.

I KEPT MY CONTROL UNIT, BECAUSE AT LEAST EVERYTHING WORKED EXCEPT THE ABS, AND BECAUSE I NEED THE CAR, WHILE MY X TYPE IS BEING PAINTED, BEFORE THE WEATHER TURNS BAD.

I TALKED TO JAGUAR, AND THEY SAID THE CONTROL UNIT DOESN'T NEED TO BE FLASHED, AND WITH AN INDEPENDENT WHO SAID THE REBUILT CONTROL UNIT MAY HAVE COME WITH NO SOFTWARE INSTALLED. THEY WOULD DO ME A FAVOR, AND INSTALL THE SOFTWARE FOR A MERE $250.

PLEASE GIVE ME SOME ADVICE. I HAVE ALSO BEEN TOLD THE NEW ABS CONTROL UNIT NEEDS TO BE DRIVEN AROUND FOR AWHILE, SO IT LEARNS HOW I DRIVE. THIS WOULD BE A LITTLE BIT DIFFICULT, BECAUSE THE TRANS GOES INTO FAILURE MODE, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON.

I HAVE ABOUT LOST IT, AND AM BECOMING MORE THAN HAPPY WITH JUST SHUTTING OFF THE TRACTION CONTROL MESSAGE IN THE SCREEN, AND IGNORING THE LITTLE ABS SYMBOL ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE CLUSTER........BE COOL.....MIKE

Here is some sage knowledge on the subject courtesy of Motorcarman:

As he and other members have said, sometimes it is plug and play, and other times programming is required.

"ALL X308/X100 4.0 Jaguars sold for the U.S. market from 2000MY> have TRACTION CONTROL.

There are 5 different modules for the 1997-2002 X100 and 1998-2003 X308

X100 > (V)018107 (1997) WITH TRACTION CONTROL=JLM20130
X100 > (V)018107 (1997) EXCEPT TRACTION CONTROL=JLM20129
X100 (V)018108-042775 (1998-1999) WITH TRACTION CONTROL=JLM20556
X100 (V)018108-042775 (1998-1999) EXCEPT TRACTION CONTROL=JLM20555

X308 > (V)878717 (1998-1999) WITH TRACTION CONTROL=JLM20556
X308 > (V)878717 (1998-1999) EXCEPT TRACTION CONTROL=JLM20555

From 2000MY there is ONLY ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!JLM21323

1997 XK8 uses different modules. (JLM20129 OR JLM20130)
1998-1999 BOTH XK and XJ share the same modules. (JLM20556 OR JLM20555)
2000MY onward BOTH XK and XJ share the same modules. (JLM21323)

SOMETIMES the modules need to be configured to the vehicle.

I repaired some modules and they sat for YEARS. I sold one to a guy and he stated that when he connected it to the car, the instpk displayed 'WRONG PART FITTED'.

He had to drive to my shop for me to configure it as a NEW MODULE and it accepted the replacement module.

I can only assume that the programming was lost over time.

BE AWARE that the part number on the module IS NOT the Jaguar part number.
There will be some sort of "LNCxxxxx or LNFxxxxx" type number.
THAT IS NOT THE PART NUMBER.

You might use it for reference but I don't know."

Mike,

I could just about put up with the Traction Control message but that STUCK CAPS LOCK KEY would drive me nuts.

Sorry Graham.........The keyboard died, and that was it's last post. I got a new one last night, from my son, who used to own a computer repair shop. He has since thought better about being his own boss, and works IT for a large corporation, with health benefits, and steady money coming in. Sorry for annoying you, but I was on death's door. I will see what happens, when I get another ABS unit from this gentleman......be cool......Mike

My car is 17 years old now, and the Jaguar dealer doesn't sell many parts for it, anymore. The control units have not been sold as new for over 5 years. What can we do now? WhiteXKR? I am not quite to the point of taking off the cluster, and crushing the diode. There has to be someway of identifying control modules......Thanks.....Mike

Since you fortunately still have your original control unit, why don't you just send that to be rebuilt? It might also make sense to check the continuity of the left front wheel sensor harness also before you go to any more trouble.
