Welcome to the forum ajm,
(I've deleted your identical question from X150 forum.)
Trying to describe or imagine a noise is extremely difficult. Any chance you can post a recording of it?
With 15k miles since the tensioner replacement, it's not impossible there's wear on them. However, the rattle on tickover which disappears on revving makes me think VVT is more likely. Trying to work out where the sound is coming from would help point to or eliminate anything to do with valves or valve guides which is another possibility.
When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

AJM, I too have a 1998 and spent many months trying to track down a similar noise. Turns out the Idler Pulley can and does wear out. Believe me it can make many different noises when it goes/is going bad. I noticed it most at very slow speeds or at idle.
To test mine, I released belt tension (just ask if you want to know how) and tried to turn this pulley by hand. It had a stepped feeling as it turned. It should be smooth as silk.
Replacment is real easy, but many things can make such noises good luck tracking it down.
