Default Rear Number plate style (UK only?)

Hi,

I have just change the reg on my newly acquired XK8, as part of the transfer I got a set of standard number plates. My car has a shaped rear plate that is fitted to the boot recess, but I though I would look to see how the rectangular plate looks instead of paying out for a larger fitted one.

When I swapped them over the old plate (from a Jag dealer) was alloy and it appears to have damaged the paint work along the bottom of the recess (perhaps it was a 1-2mm to big) which has caused a rust line.

So I was wondering what other owners though of the rear plate shape, and was the larger fitted plate standard in UK???

As i'm unsure if the rectangular plate looks better or worse then the fitted one, but a fitted one will hide my inevitably less then perfect rust removal/repair.

I don't get the opportunity to use this one very often:

My 2005 XK8 had a 'fitted' rear plate with the PO's personalised number. Unusual and certainly not a standard fit by UK dealers.

When the dealer (Parks Jaguar in Ayr) removed this they fitted a standard plate which didn't cover the holes made by the original.

I used the next oversize rectangular plate to cover these.

The standard is 20.5 x 4.5 inches, This one is 21 x 6 inches.

I'm not completely sure what you're asking, but my car has a backing plate for the number plate to attach to. I managed to find a 520x121mm (20.5x4.75in) plate that fits perfectly. As Graham stated the standard depth of a UK plate is 4.5in, but the extra quarter of an inch makes the plate fit better.

The larger than standard plate size that I used should cover the problem area.
