Default Parts prices

I needed a new windshield washer pump for my 2003 XK8. The Seattle dealer quoted me $160. I searched the internet and found several suppliers whose prices were within a couple of bucks of $115. I eventually found the part for $98. Everyone except the Seattle dealer said the list price was about $130.
I am wondering why Jaguar allows a dealer ( My Seattle buddy!) to quote a price so much higher than others claim is the list price. Anyone know?
The last little nugget - When I got the part I found out that the supplier is in fact a Jaguar dealer!!!! You could not tell that from the web site.

Welcome to the world of Jaguar parts! Many dealers increase their prices way above the suggested retail price. Always check online for prices and compare. Jaguar leaves it up to the dealers on how much they sell the parts for. It is a shame because the dealers that raise parts prices above suggested retail prices make a bad name for all the dealers that sell for the recommended prices. Most online parts come from dealers that have contracted with the online sellers.

MSRP (manufacturer's SUGGESTED retail price) The key word is suggested. When a hot car comes out some dealers charge OVER MSRP because they can. People line up and put down money to be the first on the block to drive into the neighborhood with the new Camaro or Charger and they don't care about MSRP. If there is little competition then the price stays high. hlgeorge has sage advise"Always check online for prices and compare"

I usually use jaguarparts.com as I guess that is the official online jaguar part supplier. It kind of like how Ford Performance Parts all go through the dealership that pays the most to run the online site. They are based out of the Cleavland jaguar dealarship. Used to be based out of the Washington dealer. I have to say the Washington dealer used to have much better pricing. When it switched over to the Cleaveland dealership the prices went up about an additional 20%. Still cheaper than list though and they show both list and your price.

On top of it, Jaguar dealers are not consistent with parts pricing. I find larger dealers advertising their parts online will often beat prices at my local dealership...By a lot sometimes.

Diagnostics is another example - Dealers vary from free to a couple hundred dollars just to hook up an SDD and pull codes.

I got the washer pump from jaguarpartscenter.com. Turns out that it is the Jaguar dealer in Merriam, Kansas. Not only did they have the best price but they were also very helpfull. They even faxed me a picture from the parts catalogue so that I could confirm that I was getting the correct part.

It's all just free market capitalism at work :-)

My motto about the pricing of *anything* is "You can shave a sheep a hundred times but you can only skin him once" :-)
