Default Does anti-roll bar have a ball joint?

Hi all,

My XK8 was MOT'd and given a few warnings:
1) Nearside front anti-roll bar has slight play in a ball joint
2) Offside front anti-roll bar has slight play in a ball joint
3) Offside front suspension arm has slight play in a ball joint

Is 1 and 2 accurate? I though the anti-roll bar has bushes not ball joints.
I assume 3 is referring to either the upper or lower wishbone ball joint, right?

The ends of the stabilizer bar has link rods that have ball or swivel joints attached to the control arms. That is most likely what they are referring to.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the clarification. Perhaps it's because I'm not in the business, but I find their explanations a bit vague.

Do I have a right to ask the garage to show me which parts are at fault, or is that kind of thing usually not permitted for health and safety or insurance reasons?

The links only cost about $25 for aftermarket parts, and they are incredibly easy to install. I have a pair that I'm getting ready to install. I'll make a video when I do it. I don't know how much the shop wants to charge, but it's probably something you can do yourself. If you can change a tire then you can change your own sway bar links.

That video will come in handy for the future, thanks!

For those readers who are interested, the saga continues: Yesterday I had my new MOT and it failed. You won't believe the reason I was given. Here is the feedback I sent to "IN and OUT", the garage responsible:

My car failed it's MOT due to head lamp miss-alignment. When queried, I was told "our mechanics would normally adjust the headlights but didn't know how to do it on this car". So in fact my car failed it's MOT because the mechanic doing the test didn't know how to do his job properly.

They also failed it because the rear brake light was not reliable. On any vehicle with power assisted brakes it is necessary to have the car running while testing the brakes lights otherwise, yes, the brake light may not be reliable. This fact was explained to me by an external vehicle inspector who looked at the problem and confirmed for me that there was no intermittent fault on the brake light.

As for the cautionary warnings: nothing they identified last year relating to the front ball joints (etc) were mentioned this year. Instead, a list of new warnings were given relating to both the rear wheel bearings. This is the same garage testing the same car that has had no changes and done 800 miles between tests, spending most of it's time in the garage.

I'm in the North East, near Stockton.

The car has passed it's MOT on partial re-test at the same garage. This time, with no adjustment, the headlights were found to be ok. I wonder which of these smilies is most appropriate for the situation:
