Default Timing Question

I'm trying to help a buddy that just picked up an 01 XK8. it hasnt run in about a year. the previous owner said he had the timing chains replaced. I got the timing tools from a friend at a ford dealer and lined up the crank with the plug, the cam flats (all4) are lined up parallel with the head surface. Is this Correct? the engine is missing on all 8 cyl according to the codes. if the timing is correct wheres a good place to start figuring this mess out?
Thanks in advance for any help. oh yeah the plugs were loaded with carbon so i replaced them.

Maybe a compression check? The previous owner may have been too late.

I was going there to do that today. I just wanted to be sure the timing was correct so that I could rule that out. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Who wants to tell him he has bent valves, or at least hold him down while I tell him.
