Default timing slip 99 xk8 4.0 - RESOLVED

car fired up and immediately died.

checks i have done,

no noises
we have spark
we have fuel pressure
we have injector pulse
we have oil pressure

compression test shows 20lbs or below on compression tester!!!!!
used different tester and same result on both banks

removed valve covers,
rotated engine to see if both flats on cams were the same on r/h head, yes they were.
looked at l/h head to see if the flats were the same without moving engine, yes they were.

now if the chain had slipped, how would all four cams be in line, there are no common components except the woodruff key in the crank and if this has sheared what are the chances of both crank sprockets slipping the same amount with a piece of the woodruff key holding them together?

pushing a probe into no. 1 spark plug hole has the piston just down from TDC when the cams are in time.

i cannot check the crank position yet as i do not have the car on a lift.

this will be my next check.

if the timing has slipped i will probably have bent valves in both heads due to previous checks and the compression test?

now people with s-types and xj8's using the 4.0 engine will not be able to see it and any resolution that may be forth comming

dude, you would have been in a vacuum in the GT section if you wish I'll move you back.
What did you do before this happened?

Aluming what: it's not Mechanical?
It's nOt fuel?
It's electrical???
Battery test out ok
Relay to fuel pump etc

Bent valves are a 0 compression situation on just the bent cylinders.

99% sure its borewash.

tiny bit o oil in each cylinder and you should be off to the races.

Every car forum has a different vibe. In this one, nearly all problems are solved in the model sections.

hirev,

i have 45lbs of fuel pressure on key on engine off and also when cranking so i would say that the fuel system is good.

i also have a pulse at the injectors so the fuel would be delivered to the cylinders.

it also cranks till the point of making oil pressure so i would suggest that the battery is also o.k.

dsnyder586,

maybe you are on the right track, i remember that situation on an s-type about 15 years ago so i may give it a try, it just makes me wonder about hydrostatic lock, i have seen V-12 engines break the crank trying the oil in the bores trick but if there is blow by, then that shouldn't happen as the oil should blow past the rings.

prior to this happening, the day before i washed the car, fatal i know but it was due for its 6 monthly wash and wax.
pulled it out of the shop, washed it and drove it back in, next day i was going to use my newly waxed beauty, got in, turned the key and it fired and quit almost instantly, never to fire again!!!

Yes, it's bore wash. The nikasil engines are particularly sensitive and the engine should be warmed to at least mid scale on the gauge before being shut off.

i will refrain from duding in the future, especially if you are not fastidious in dress and manner, an easterner in the west, a city dweller unfamiliar with life on the range or a man.

clearly "dude" means something different in Texas.
A part of the U.S. where it is acceptable to have place called "a hair on an elephants *** ranch" of which there are many.
dude ranches not hairs.

we have gone off track a little, i will try the oil in the bores today.

I think that will be the answer, driving in and out of the garage is a classic bore wash scenario.

six squirts of oil in each plug hole did the trick, we're up and running !!!!!

Just an afterthought but if the OP was concerned about the car jumping a timing tooth or two does this mean the original tensioners are in the car? If so borewash will soon be the least of his problems.
