Default keyless entry programming not working

I recently bought a new keyless entry remote for my 2000 xk8. After programming it the car beeped twice but the remote still doesn't work.......any suggestions?

Can you describe the procedure you used?

What remote did you buy?

Welcome to the forum '00XK8,

Not only do you have to ensure the remote is the correct one for the Model Year, there's a number of different programing procedures and you must use the one applicable to your MY. As pomosv has requested, please describe the procedure you have tried.

When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST section and post some information about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see.

In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice on posting to the forum.

I bought a remote that looks just like my old one. To program I held the bright lights on while I turn the key one click, then flashed the brights 4 times, the car beeped once, then pushed the lock button on the remote, after a few seconds the car beeped twice.

Anyone? Surely someone has an idea of what I'm doing wrong.

Can't help you with a solution, but if it's any consolation, i tried to buy a new remote at retail price ( £100+ ) from a Jaguar independent specialist dealers in London.
They tried for almost an hour, and used 2 different computers, each apparently containing different software, but even THEY failed to get the car to recognise it properly, and therefore i couldn't buy it.

It may be some obscure problem with the alarm electronics, that i still haven't solved.

One of the old remotes worked until it packed up (it was well worn and dying) so i figure it's probably possible.

Did your old remote work?

And where did you buy your new one from?

I've always found programming remotes is more like Black Magic than Science. A sequence that works on one vehicle sometimes doesn't work on another of the same MY!

After that pessimistic note, the good news is I've always got them programmed eventually.

Are you trying to program an additional or a replacement remote? You have to program all remotes (up to five) at the same time. An additional remote can't be programmed separately.

Is it a new remote or a used one? If used, has the supplier tested it to guarantee all the buttons are working?

There is one critical step that everyone seems to miss. It is in multiple threads, but people jump ahead while reading and go for the gusto ... leading to inevitable failure.

There is an allowance for fixed number of remotes. Usually 5. You have to use all of them. Following the procedure for adding remotes, the last or only remote has to be programmed multiple times to make up the total. So, if the particular model year has the usual 5 slots, and there is one remote, it has to be programmed into the system 5 times.

When the procedure is followed in full, it works first time every time.

I've read several threads about remote problems, but i've not seen that before.
There's also an article in the FAQ section describing the procedure, which doesn't include that information either.
Perhaps it would be worthwhile adding this thread to the other thread in the FAQ?

The obvious question that arises, is whether or not there is a way to UN-assign a remote to a car, because in the event someone tries to assign a remote and fails, they may discard it?

In my case, the indy attempted to assign a remote and failed, so the remote wasn't purchased.

Edit:
That information is in fact included in the FAQ thread, for every car except the XK8/R.
