Ian,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XK8/XKR forum. This is the place to post tech questions about your model.

Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Graham

DON'T depend on the temp gauge in the car, that is a lame gauge and really only hits HOt/Red light comes on AFTER the car is about over heated. If you have a DROID phone download the Torque app and get the ELM Bluetooth adapter from eBay which will allow you to read the temps MUCH more accurately.

I can't help with the first items from here, but for the smells hot please understand that the temperature gauge is really a glorified idiot light. It reads mid scale from 185 F to about 230 F, the jumps into the red as the engine is about to melt down.

Check that the fans operate when the A/C is on. If not that may be your problem. But you may have air in the cooling system, another cause of overheating, or more likely, the thermostat is not opening. That's a common problem.

Most of the time all you need is proof of ownership and they will give you the code. I do not know this for sure but was told to use the last 4 of the vin number.

As for the heating issue the gauge in the car is a placebo so do not depend on it. If you have an infrared temp probe use it to verify the operating temperature. Have you checked your thermostat and water pump?

What year Ian ??? - wiring diagrams can differ depending on age of car. Worth putting in your "signature" - saves a lot of questions like this !!

Use Ebay for spares - there's always several XK8/Rs being broken in the UK. SimplyPerformace (Jon), CatKiller (Trevor) and Eurojag are regular sellers, all of whom I can personally recommend. SimplyPerformance can't be far from you - I seem to remember they are in the Oxford area. Got lots of stuff from there when I hit a deer at around 40 mph a year or so ago.

thats the confusing bit the reg number makes it 96 the v5 makes it 2003 but jaguar uk say it is a 1998 first registered in belfast so i guess it is a 1998 with a private plate that came to britain and reregistered in 2003

That makes sense - the first 1998 car was AR024687 and the last 1998 XK8 was AR031303 so yours is between those numbers.

................... in which case - check the following fuses, all in the boot fuse box next to the battery.
#1 - 5A
#12 - 20A
#14 - 40A
#20 - 20A
These are all involved in the very complicated process of getting your roof up and down :-)

All the fuses that are part of the hood circuits are, I'm fairly sure, in the big fuse/relay box next to the battery in the boot (trunk)

There are five fuse boxes in total :
1 : Boot / Trunk
2 & 3 : At each end of the dash/fascia
4 : At rear of engine compartment - depends on RHD or LHD as to which side.
5 : At side of engine - just behind ABS control unit on left-hand side.

Did you find the problem with the roof? If not tell us what it is doing. Is the pump running? Are all the hoses connected to the pump? Is the tank full to the top embossed line? Is the petcock closed?

The feed for the pump motor is fuse #14 a 40a fuse however; it goes to the pump relays that are controlled by the security and locking control module. Fuses #12 & 14 are for the windows. Also the power to the latch and main control solenoids are from the security and locking module so for now all you need to check is the motor fuse and 2 (top up / top down) relays Page 24.
