I have been researching my problem for a lil while. I assume it to be the crankshaft position sensor. My question is WHERE IS IT? and is it easy to replace myself.

 

It is located on the flywheel housing and would appear to be easily accessable. What led you to the conclusion that you had a Crankshaft Position Sensor problem? Haven't heard of any problems with this item.

 

1999 XJR I have been reading on this board and wanted to try it before I replaced a fuel pump. When I attempt to start car it turns over and starts but dies(stalls) immediately. I have replaced fuel pump relays but no change. would you suggest something else? I am also no mechanic but mechanically inclined.

 

Do you have a check engine light? If so, you need to have the OBDII codes read. If not, it wouldn't hurt to read them anyway. Several of the big national auto parts outlets will read them for you free. A sensor failure will surely set a code. The codes will usually point to the problem, or at least offer several suggestions as to the solution. There a large number of issues that could cause your problem.

 

I am not getting a check engine light. would i get a code with no check engine light? BTW my car was running fine until the was a gas shortage and I had to put lower grade in the car with octane booster.

 

Fuel filter perhaps clogged beyond acceptable limits...

 

Like Matt, I would suspect fuelbefore than a crank position sensor (CPS). The CPS controls timing input to the ECM but is far down my list of things to replace unless you know something we don't. Get a code readout. Can't hurt, and yes, you can get codes without a check engine light. These cars are so electrically complex that using the internal diagnostics is the only way to chase issues.

I guess if the car will not run, driving to a parts store is a little more of an issue. I have never seen a fuel filter completely stop a car from running, only affecting performance.

 

In my experience with other cars a defective Crank Position Sensor would definately send a code and trip the check engine light - it's a pretty basic and fundamental part and drives alot of other systems.

If there is a fuel pressure regulator on these engines I'd check that. (I couldn't find one listed in my parts catalog, but I'm new to Jaguarso I don't really know...)It's an easy fix when rough idling, backfiring and slow to restart issues come up...

 

i have a crankshaft sensor code on my 2000 xk8. I would like a diagram of where it is or a video for the the XK8 not and XJ8. thanks
