Replacing speakers in X-Type - 6/26/2006 11:26:56 AM
Guest
My front driver's side speaker buzzes at any volume above normal. And I'm not real impressed with the entire sound system as a whole anyway..... so I have decided to replace everything except the stock headunit.

I'm almost positive I do not have the premium Alpine system. Anyone know how I can find out for sure? A door code or something? Also, assuming I don't, what size are all the stock speakers? How are they powered? All off the headunit? And I've heard the stock speakers are molded into the door paneling. As in you have to cut through a little plastic to remove them rather than un-bolting. Truth to this? Any info would help!

Dude, I am going out of my mind trying to find an owners manuel for a 1990 XJ6 so that I can pull the door panels off to install a new sound system. If you were able to find some installation info that might help me I would appreciate it.
Thanks

I don't know about 90'..... SURELY there has been serious changes since then..... but I'm about to remove the door panels myself and take a look at everything. I've done an install or two in my time .... lol .... so I think I'll be able to stumble through it.

well I've pulled the panels from a few american made cars but I do not see any kind of screws at all, if it is just rivets or grommets I don't want to gorilla them off in fear of damaging the panel

After doing a little research first (such as this post) I've been told it is the plastic pop rivits things. Not uncommon at all.

Well that's good news that its just rivets but without a manuel showing exact locations I dont want to start just popping it off(u know all that wood finish) I am trying to be as meticulous as possible but in doing so I am not getting anything done-No ideas on how to find an owners manuel huh--ive tried everything from "Jaguar Dealer to Barnes and Noble bookstores

The front door panels are held on by two phillips head screws at very bottom of panel and one behind the door pull handle. You need to pry the cover off. Next grab the top corner and kung fu it off the door. Make sure you note door latch cable routing. Be careful because those door panel clip holders break easy.

Rear is the same but only one phillips at bottom and the one behind the door pull.

Speakers unscrew from door itself. 3 phillips heads. I believe they are 5 1/4 " but maybe wrong.

To install new, you may have to remove the speaker then the speaker housing. You will definitly have to cut the factory connector off and put new connectors on to fit to new speaker.

I put a set of MB Quart speakers into a customer car with the factory audio unit and it sounded very good.

You didn't state year of your X-Type, however, these wire colours are for 2002 & 2003. Maybe the same for later years also. If not, repost and I can give later years. Diagram doesn't show  + or - so I will list pin 1 or 2 eg: lhf (left hand front) wg/1 white wire with green trace pin 1.

LHF Yellow = 1 White = 2
LHR Yellow/Blue = 1 White/Blue = 2
RHF Yellow/Red = 1 White/Red = 2
RHR Yellow/Red = 1 White/Green = 2

One could assume that pin 1 would be positive. Depends on your belief of theory Positive to Negative or ViceVersa.

Hope this helps.
