Hi, I own a 1987 XJ6 and have a problem distinguishing between 2 VIN numbers on the car.  The # on the drivers door is different from the metal stamped VIN # in back of the engine compartment on top of the firewall.  I think these numbers should be the same but I'm not sure.  If anyone is knowledgable about Jag VIN's please let me know.  Thanks

the correct VIN is the one in your current Registration. also you can do a CARFAX search using both numbers - who knows what you might find out.

At some point perhaps a previous owner replaced the driver's door and just left the old tag on it.  This was not uncommon due to rust.

mine is a 1984 and it has no rust, it does have a lot of rustproofing. but who knows, anything is possible, and if the car is from the north, rust is definitely a problem, but 1987 models had even more rustproofing. But I agree, the door might have been replaced, in which case the VIN in the car's registration should match the one in the firewall.
