When do I get a tune-up? - 4/15/2005 7:04:21 PM

I bought a 2001 Jaguar S-Type about 2 months ago with 38 K miles on it. I just wanted to know when do I get a tune-up, and what that consist of. In my BENZ a little indicator somes on my dash to tell me when to do everything so I am a little unfamiliar with the JAG's.

Also twice now the car will start going into "putt putt" mode where the odemeter will flucuate, and acts like it wants to stop. Once it did it on a freeway. The check engine light would flash on and off, but never stayed on steady, and then all of a sudden it stopped and the car was back to normal.

Any idea of what that would be?

JAG RECCOMENDS EVERY 16000 KM OR ONCE A YEAR FOR A SERVICE AND IN BETWEEN AN OIL CHANGE.AS FAR AS A TUNE UP PLUGS NEED NOT BE CHANGED FOR 160KM AND FUEL FILTER AT YOUR 96KM SERVICE

I would say a sensor is messed up either on the intake side,MAS (Mass air sensor) or the exhaust side, o2 sensor. Its triping the computer and it throws the CE light. The car should be fine but it is telling you something. The o2 sensor should last longer than 38k miles but you never know. I would have someone plug the car in and run a diagnostic on it.

Tune up is easy if you know your way around a car. Minus the injector cleaning and fuel pump, you can change the plugs and wire yourself. I usually go 50k miles on plugs and wires. 60-70k for injectors. Fuel pump should last you well over 100k miles.

Your intermittent CEL could be a bad ignition coil or two. If they aren't under the intake manifold, that isn't a hard thing to fix. If they are under the manifold it can get pricey. A faulty ignition coil can short until turned off and then on again and then run normally until it shorts again. Ive seen it both in an S Type and in a Mercedes AMG. It could also be a bad sensor. You (or a mechanic) need to hook it up to an OBD II reader to determine what the problem is, and if you can hook it in while the car is missing that is helpful too. Best of luck.
