Just registered because I aquired a 84 XJS with a 350 implant...

One of the rear discs is making a grinding noise like its out of pad (metal on metal). I checked and the pads are about 70%. Now I noticed that one pad is loose (back off the disc) but the other is tight up against the disc. It is possible that this Jag has been stored for quite some time and maybe the calipers are sticky

What is the best way to work the calipers (back off the cup)?

Any other thoughts?

Oh I did diconect the E brake to eliminate that for diagnostics.

Do I need to drop the rear end to remove the calipers?

The guys in our shop drop the cage assembly and remove the calipers from there.

Thanks Ken

After some research I found the brake noise to be the park brake pad was wasted.

I pulled the caliper until I have time to drop the cage.

I called the dealer up north and they wanted $170 for a set of pads and he sounded pissed for looking it up when I said thank you but didn't order them.

Gotta love the web...  I found them for $30

These cars are just too old for most dealers.  They don't want to mess with them.  That's really we folks like us are here.  Don't be too hard on the dealer.  It's just not his world for the most part.
